35 Week Pregnancy Update

The final countdown has begun! baby will be here in about a month and the time for panic has kicked in!  I can’t believe how much we still need to get done and that we waited a bit too long with our second batch of cloth diapers. We found this amazing affordable cloth diaper company, that had really amazing packages for around the same price as what we bought our second hand cloth diapers for, but these diapers are brand new, comes in amazing colours and the reviews are just great, unfortunately with all the procrastination we were doing, most of the diapers are sold out!  Let this be a lesson kids, never say you will buy something later, sometimes later is a little bit too late!  We can’t seem to find another cloth diaper company that’s as affordable so we will have to stock up on more biodegradable diapers before baby A arrives.

I’ve also been in full nesting mode and nothing is surviving the rampage I’m on.  I even started buffing Carl’s laptop clean.  Yes, things have gotten out of hand.

35 weeks pregnant

^^ This baby is so high up.

After doing a lot of research, I’m always up for an experience;  I’ve decided on doing a month of confinement when the baby arrives.  The whole process makes a lot of sense to me, so I’ve been raiding all our Chinese grocers,  stocking up on a lot of confinement herbs, I’m not going to go completely authentic in it, but I’ve made a couple of western adjustments to the diet and rules to suit my needs a little better.  I’m really excited to try it out and have the month to bond with baby, while letting my body heal and putting heat back into my body after my home birth.

35 weeks pregnant

Speaking about home birth, I’ve finally started getting my home birth supplies!  I was waiting until my last midwife appointment for them to tell me if everything is fine and that baby A is still in the head down position.  Well I got the heads down, A okay I needed and just started buying all the “wonderful” incontinent supplies I needed!  Nothing makes you feel like a grown up like standing in line with a trolley full of linen savers, adult diapers, a plastic fitted sheet, gauze and surgical spirits.  The cashier must have been wondering what I’m up to!

35 weeks pregnant

How far along? 35 weeks! Almost time to meet this little baby.

35 weeks pregnant

Weight? I’ve actually been really consistent with my weight and kept losing weight or staying the same, I only gained some weight with my last appointment.

Cravings? Still craving watermelon, mangoes, pears, grapes and Ice.  I’m about to hop on a plane in search of mangoes, I’m getting that desperate.

How I’m feeling? I’m feeling really prepared and ready to meet this baby! This last trimester has been a rough one!  I’m constantly hungry and need to snack the whole time just to stay functional.  To be honest I’m getting really tired of eating! I feel like I’m getting jaw muscles.  I’ve still been eating healthy food, so no gluten, no sugar, clean eating meals that keep me going and doesn’t make me feel pooped.  Even Carl loves this diet, he’s looking better than ever, his hair is shiny as can be and he seems to be losing wrinkles!  I’m definitely going to continue eating this way when the baby arrives.

Sleep? I’m still sleeping pretty well, I just get up more often to use the loo, but I fall asleep almost instantly after.

Maternity Clothes? I’m wearing my maternity jeans often and a couple of dresses, but I’m mostly just wearing clothes I wore pre pregnancy.

Best Moment? Finishing up the baby mobile, painting the baby dresser and sorting out little things in the baby’s room.  Finding out our baby’s got a small head.

Worst Moment? Getting the pregnancy rash on my tummy….Its so unpleasant, combine that with the unattractive veins popping out all over my body, it makes you realise anyone who ever said pregnancy was beautiful was a giant liar.  I’ve been trying out mama naturals methods for getting rid of the rash and it seems to be working.  I also got an allergic reaction at church that left me with a swollen face, thanks to all the proteas and fynbos flower arrangements all over the show.  I’m allergic to South Africa’s national flowers, good job body.

Movement? So much movement! This baby doesn’t seem to like loud noises or people speaking in loud tones ( Shouting) and really lets me have it when I’m around anything baby doesn’t like.

I can’t wait to meet this little person soon!

^^ Found this really inexpensive chest of drawers for the baby’s room and gave it a little make over.

img_4737new

^^ I wanted more of a woodland green, but I just didn’t have enough paint stainer to get it there.  Happy surprises, because I really like the way it turned out.  Later on I spray painted the knobs gold.  Walking around with a face mask, while pregnant felt like a ridiculous sight, but things need to get done!

img_4755new

^^ Nursery break! I’ve been desperately looking for a fiddle fig tree, with no luck at all.  I’ll find you my beautiful planty friend!

img_4787new

^^ Made the best sugar free, gluten free pumpkin pie bars ever! It was like magic in my mouth, the gingery crust, made me feel like crying tears of happiness! I was floating my own boat hard while thinking I’m a recipe genius!

^^ The guinea fowl family on our walk again, these guys really know how to make you feel bad, when you try to pass them, and they all scatter like you’re the biggest murderer on this planet.

Hi friends!  Whew! Its been a couple of days hasn’t it?  I’ve just been so busy with all lives demands and trying to get everything ready for the baby! I still feel like I have so much to do and buy!  I’m starting to feel just a tad overwhelmed, but I downloaded the hypnobabies app on my phone and its just the best thing to listen to!

I feel like this week has been a whirlwind for the entire world……I try to keep my blog neutral and easy, but what is going on with the world? I’m still in so much shock about the US elections and the effect this will have on all the other countries and I just can’t believe people chose fear again so soon after brexit.  In the beginning of the year I couldn’t wait to see what humans were going to do next and now, I’m like how is such a racist, sexist, completely insane man, going to be president? but who knows maybe this will be the time were people stand together and realise fear is not the answer, we should live with kindness and treat people kindly.   Okay! Rant over!  I felt like I needed to say something about all the craziness right now!  Things will get better, the earth is too beautiful to not care!

Tips for dealing with stress during pregnancy

We all experience stress in our lives from time to time, but constant stress is not healthy and stressing during pregnancy can be linked to preterm labour and a lower birth weight, I seriously read that and think “I can’t believe with statements like that, that everyone expects me to be calm”.  Stress during pregnancy is just the worst, because most of the time with the insane amount of hormones swimming around your body trying to make you emotional for silly things you end up crying and feeling horrible about everything.  I’m your typical type A personality and we all know that stands for typical type Anal about everything personality.  I like things to get done and when it doesn’t I start wondering how people can live in such an unorganised world!  but the world is unorganised and that’s one of the reasons its a wonderful adventure to be on, so here is some of my tips to just relax and de-stress yourself during pregnancy.

TIPS FOR DEALING WITH STRESS DURING PREGNANCY

dsc_2681newpregnanc

  1. Relax: This is one I have a hard time with, there is just so much to do all the time and allowing myself some time to unwind when so much still needs to get done has been hard.  Sometimes I kind of forget I’m pregnant, but pregnancy is hard on your body and its just something you have to embrace.  Enjoy some me time, put your feet up and forget about everything that needs to get done. Tomorrow is another day!
  2. Get outside:  I’ve traded in my pregnancy workout for daily walks instead.  Getting outside when I can really gives me some time to clear my head.  The fresh air seems to clear up any mind fogginess.
  3. Ask for help: Your husband/partner/friend is not a mind reader, most of the time they can’t tell we need help; especially if we keep going on like we’re completely fine.  Ask your husband for a little more help around the house or anything you really need, they will understand and be happy to help.  I’ve been having moments when I’m just too tired to make dinner after a long day, at first I got angry at the fact that Carl can’t make anything edible, after that I decided to teach him how to cook and the basics of cooking.  It seems like a lot of work, but he seems to be enjoying it and I get to delegate and help him be able to feed himself a healthy meal when I’m not around. Every problem has a solution when you have a clear head and don’t get mad about it.  Figure it out!
  4. Meditate: Meditation is a hard one for me, I can never get my mind silent enough to be able to just relax! Somehow, lately with construction happening in the front of us and to the side, with the loudest construction workers screaming at each other and my peak stress level jumping through the roof I managed to do my own kind of meditation.  I put on some music and just have a moment on my yoga mat, doing some prenatal yoga, and a little bit of mind clearing meditation.  Find your own kind of meditation, for some people its getting in the zone and cleaning their house, who knows how you can personally find your inner peace.  I feel like I’m becoming a true yogi with that statement.  Namaste.
  5. Treat yo’self:  With everything revolving around your unborn child at the moment its easy to forget to take care of yourself.  It can be something as simple as taking a hot bath and just relaxing or it can be buying yourself something that makes you feel beautiful while being pregnant ( sometimes that feels like a difficult task).  For me it was splurging on a pair of amazing maternity pants, that actually fit properly and doesn’t have that hint of hideousness that comes with maternity clothes.
  6. Educate yourself: Read all the books, google, google, google, talk to friends with babies or your midwife/obgyn, just find out everything you need to know or are concerned about.  At the same time, don’t get too scared about the what if’s, because the internet will always tell you something simple is a tumour, educate yourself, but take everything with a grain of salt. If you’re concerned ask your obgyn, they will most likely put your mind at ease.  Now go feed your growing tumour baby.  Thanks internet.
  7. People will give you their advice:  Sometimes the biggest stress is a good meaning, slightly mean person who tells you what you’re doing is wrong, trust that what you’re doing is the best way for YOU and do it!  Laugh all the silly comments off.
  8. Avoid trigger people or situations: if you feel overly stressed out around a certain situation, avoid it! Be a little selfish, you are growing a baby! This is the time you should easily be able to avoid something for the good of your baby and yourself.
  9. Talk to someone: Sometimes the best thing you can do is just talk to someone you trust about all your concerns, get it all out and let them tell you, you’re being silly.
  10. Eat a balanced diet: Drink plenty of water during pregnancy to lessen pregnancy symptoms, eat food that will make you feel good, instead of feel good right now.
  11. Trust that everything will work out the way its supposed to.  Believe in Gods plan and have faith in yourself.

I hope these tips will help any soon to be mama out there be able to start relaxing and de-stressing.  Go on! Go take that bath/ binge watch netflix you deserve it!

^^  During one of our walks, Carl demanded a after shave balm to ease his skin.  I made this and immediately after testing it on my hands ( I always have little cuts on my hands, not very lady like) felt extremely jealous.  It smells so good, and soothed my hands and just when I didn’t think it could get better, it left my hands softer than soft.

Hi friends! How was your weekend? did you get up to anything?  We wen’t on a shopping trip to get our monthly food in hopes of avoiding our local supermarket for 2 – 3 weeks.  It gets way to crazy in that area when people get paid!  Instead we’ve decided to call our next two weekend, maintenance weekends.   Our little home was left in a state and we haven’t really gotten down to the real down and dirty cleaning.  We have to wash all the windows and mow the lawn of the most insanely overgrown garden ever!

We’ve been going for daily walks together that feels like the best therapy ever.  Our morning talks are just the best, even if I hate Carl a bit every morning when he forces me to get up for walkies, like a dog, but by the end of the walk I feel so refreshed!  Hope everyone’s week is lovely!

Hey friends! How have you been?  I’ve been trying to keep my stress levels down and relax more, and mentally preparing myself for the last couple of months before our baby arrives.   We still have a lot to do and didn’t even get to painting the baby’s room yet! I’ve been feeling really swamped lately, like there is not enough hours in the day to accomplish everything I need to get done!  Trying to relax in our new house has also been a little difficult with all the shouting from two construction sites right next to our house, you would think the construction is loud, but no….Its the people! They’re always screaming, and whistling and just going a little bonkers, but I still love our little place!

Hopefully I get to blog more this week and get a lot done!

30 Weeks Pregnancy Update

img_4460new1

I can’t believe that today I’m 30 weeks pregnant and 5 days!  EEEK! It feels this pregnancy is just getting away from me! and I haven’t really had a moment to just sit back and enjoy it.    We’ve been in an insane rush, moving into our new place, waiting for things to arrive and trying to make this place a home before the baby arrives.  One of the first things we wanted to get done was our bedroom, we have the cutest little spot set up for baby A’s arrival and we are so close to being done completely with the room.  Our bedroom is on the top level of the house, so we are setting up the nursery for day time use, because we’re always doing something downstairs.

img_4478new

^^ Sometimes when you ask your husband to take a photo you will get stuck with gems like this or 10 different photos of you trying to fix your scarf while saying wait.

I just can’t believe we are at 30 weeks already! My list of stuff to get done seems to be getting bigger and I’m starting to feel a little overwhelmed! we have to get more cloth diapers, but I just order some biodegradable disposable diapers for the first week of baby A’s big arrival.  I’m preparing myself for a  really cranky baby that can’t believe how bright and hot the real world is,  having some biodegradable disposable diapers seems like bliss!

img_4483new

How big is baby : about the size of a cabbage.

Pregnancy Symptoms: After all the moving, carrying stuff around, moving a couch around while Carl wasn’t around, Yes, I know I suck at being pregnant, but I just couldn’t wait! ( I was always safe guys! don’t worry) I had a moment of low blood pressure during the week, it was nothing a homemade electrolyte drink and salty popcorn couldn’t fix, but man it knocked me off my feet!  Some days have been so busy that I didn’t have time to eat healthy or I find myself accidently skipping meals, so I’ve tried to make more healthy snacks that’s quick to eat and can be eaten anywhere.  I’ve made some sugar, free gluten free chia seed protein bars, gluten and sugar free date squares and try to keep vegetable sticks close at hand now.  Baby never seems happy at lunch unless a Kale salad is involved, baby loves kale.

Sleep: I’m still sleeping wonderfully at night (Knock on wood) I hope this continues, because I get grumpy when I don’t get my beauty sleep.

Cravings: I’ve been craving watermelon and mangoes like crazy during this pregnancy, but haven’t been able to find them anywhere,  they’ve been out of season.  Hopefully I get to enjoy some soon.

Movement: Baby is always going crazy in there and just kicks me right in the ribs every second.  I’ve actually seen baby’s foot just resting on my rib, like its nothing but a thang.  I like poking at it until I get a hard kick.  Yes, I obviously deserve the kicks.

Moment of the week: Painting the baby’s nursery, painting the horns of a clay deer gold and starting to decorate the bottom nursery.  After a lot of talk about what to do with the nursery, I really wanted to do a black and white nursery, until Carl made a comment that its going to look like our baby is in Norwegian prison, but it will all be okay, because when baby is done serving time, they will be able to be placed back into society without a problem.  I decided maybe a black and white nursery wasn’t for us, instead we’ve settled on a boho woodland themed nursery, it seems so fitting,  we saw a a fox while walking around in Dublin, when little baby was conceived. I can’t wait for our cute little fox.

Exercise:  Still doing 30 -45 minutes of cardio, weight training and stretching everyday during the week and walking for an hour and a half or more on the weekends.

img_4473new

So far everything is going wonderfully, I feel strong, mentally and physically.  I’m ready for this home birth and can’t wait to meet our little baby.

^^ A pretty sky right in front of our little house.

Hey friends! How was your weekend? Did you get up to anything interesting? We had a completely overwhelming weekend filled with all the house things we are still trying to get done.  I’ve painted baby A’s room, but have been confused about painting the wooden ceiling or not, I really think the roof needs to be painted white to open up and brighten up this space, but at the same time I’m wondering if the wooden ceiling will go more with the woodland theme we’ve got going on in there.   So far I’m 95% in favour of painting it white.  What do you think? Should I paint it?

We’ve had glorious cooler weather here, that we’ve just been loving!  It would have been even better if we had our couch by now.  Ordering stuff online in South Africa is such a pain, in America you’ve got drone deliveries here we have to wait an unnaturally long time for anything to arrive!  We’ve also been trying to get a telephone line installed for internet, but wow its turned into the biggest deal! We apparently have to wait 5 – 21 days.   What kind of timeline is that? It doesn’t even make sense to me! Oh well! Everything is a lesson, and right now I’m learning how to have patience.

Here’s to another week! I hope this one is just as great.

What I ate: 28 Weeks Pregnant

I can’t believe how fast this pregnancy is flying by, I feel like I need to update and talk more about it before its all over and the lack of sleep thanks to a cute little newborn makes me all crazy and frazzled.

I’ve cut a lot of food out of my diet since finding out I’m pregnant, I’ve figured out what works for me and what doesn’t work for me one bit.  It all seems to be paying off, because I’m feeling great, have a lot of energy, I’m sleeping wonderfully and all my tests keep coming back great.  A couple of things I’ve cut out is; sugar, the big bad culprit we all know is bad for us, but we just can’t get enough of it, I actually wasn’t eating that much sugar before we went to Ireland, but as soon as we arrived in Ireland it was like I just had to have all the sugar.  All those delicious first world treats and candy I’ve never tried before had to be consumed.  I don’t regret my Irish sugar binge one bit, but I’m so glad I’m off sugar again, it just makes me feel so much better and my skin just feels wonderful! I’ve also limited my fruit in take to 3 – 4 fruit a day.  I got rid of most gluten, but kept rye bread in the mix, but I started getting severe heartburn from it from just one bite, so no more bread for me.  I’ve started sprouting most of my grains and legumes for easier digestion, personally I never knew brown rice could be sprouted, but wow, does it improve the taste!  and I’ve cut out soy, unless its fermented. Here is a look at what I’ve been eating.

BREAKFAST: Around 8 am

Gluten Free Overnight PorridgeIron rich Overnight Oats

I tried having a smoothie for breakfast, but it really just doesn’t work for me.  It doesn’t fill me up or keep me going for long, also the consistency really gets me on an empty stomach.  Instead I’ve been sticking to my Iron rich overnight oats or Grain free coconut flour overnight porridge filled with chia seeds, ground flax and hemp seeds.  I top both of these with fruit and coconut yogurt.  Its so good and keeps me going till around 12 pm – 1 pm.  Overnight porridge is just so convenient, you add all your ingredients in a jar, shake it up and leave it in the fridge overnight.  You wake up to a delicious, no hassle breakfast.  Convenient.

Snack: 12 pm

Green smoothie

I don’t really feel snacky, the porridge really keeps me full and satisfied for a long time, but around 12 pm or 1 pm, I start feeling a bit of a hankering for food. I either have a green smoothie or a couple of spoons of my favourite oh mega peanut butter or nuts.

LUNCH 2 pm

Healthy nori wrap img_4111new

Kale salad to go

^^ Look how well it travels.

I don’t really stray to far from my trusty kale salad for lunch, its so easy to make. I usually make a big salad that last me the whole week, it keeps well and transports amazingly in a lunchbox.  The kale salad consists of  kale chopped finely and massaged with lemon juice, sprinkled with salt and an avocado smashed in.  Topped with beetroot, carrot, tomatoes, celery, cucumber, peppers, roasted pumpkin seeds and lightly fried tempeh or walnut and mushroom meat.  Other lunches I have;  a nori wrap filled with sprouted beetroot hummus and vegetables.  So yummy and filling.

Snack: 5 pm – 5 -30 pm

vegan protein shake

Like clock work I have my green protein shake at this time.  I’ve started adding moringa leaf powder to it for added benefits.  Moringa is just the best.

DINNER: 6:30 pm – 7 pm

img_4285new img_4202new

Amazing lentil soup

For dinner I’ve been having my Moroccan lentil soup, a coconut flour base pizza, with homemade sugar free Iron rich BBQ sauce topped with a lot of veggies.  Burrito bowls made with cauliflower and broccoli rice, walnut meat and other veggies.  and a lot more.

DESSERT:

img_4165new

I usually have one block of 85% or darker, dark chocolate or Frozen banana bites with date salted caramel.  I use the salted date sauce in my protein shake for extra date goodness.

Drinks : not mentioned is all the water I drink!  I drink a lot of water some with lemon in it some just like that and occasionally I’ll have a rooibos tea latte.  My dinners change, but breakfast and lunch stays the same!  Not mentioned: I do take prenatal vitamins!

That’s just a quick peak into what I’m eating while pregnant.

Hey friends! What did you guys do this weekend?  We’ve been preparing for our move in 2 weeks and trying to buy everything at just the right moment so it will be delivered on the day we move in! Hopefully it all works out perfectly, otherwise this pregnant lady will be sleeping on the floor! We decided to go to Tokai forest before they start felling, so we can walk around the forest and be happy amongst all the trees.  I’m really sad that they want to cut down all the pine trees in Cape town for fynbos, but that’s just because I’m horribly allergic to it and it feels like Cape town is slowly trying to kill me, but we are only planning on staying here for a year or two so hopefully all the felling gets delayed and I get to enjoy all the trees until we leave.  Hopefully!

Surviving the First Trimester of Pregnancy

It feels like a million years ago since the first trimester, but boy, do I remember it.  The irrational anger and emotion, feeling like I’m going totally insane, falling asleep in a yoga position ( Yes, it happened and it was surprisingly comfortable), the total exhaustion, the need to wear comfy clothes and the totally ridiculous nausea just to tie it all together in the perfect little package of ” making a baby is HARD”.  I’m here to tell you it does get easier and that soon you will feel like your old self again ( Hello, Second trimester).

I managed to make all the symptoms of the dreaded first trimester as easy as possible by making little changes that made all the difference, and I don’t think its fair to keep it all to myself.  So here is my top ten tips for surviving the first trimester, or making it a little easier.

SURVIVING THE FIRST TRIMESTER OF PREGNANCY

Surviving The First Trimester of pregnancy

  1. Coconut water: Staying hydrated is really important during pregnancy and coconut water seemed to just make me feel so much better.  Loaded with potassium and electrolytes it even gave me the tiny energy boost I needed and it just tasted so much better than actual water to me.
  2. Rest:  When you have time just take naps, even if its a quick car nap during your lunch time. You’re growing a human its hard work don’t feel bad, you will regret not taking those naps when the insomnia kicks in later in your pregnancy.
  3. Eat often:  Yes, it seems like the worst idea ever, but every time I got hit with nausea it could have been prevented with just eating something.  I realised just because I don’t feel hungry doesn’t mean I’m not hungry.  Eating small meals made the nausea bearable and made me feel human.  Find the meals that don’t repulse you and nibble on that.  I made a whole meal, only to throw the entire thing away, because I couldn’t stand the look and smell of it.  Give yourself a break and eat what you can.
  4. Healthy treats: Try not to go overboard with your cravings, its probably the things that are making you feel sick.  Find healthy sugar free recipes and make yourself a treat that’s actually good for you, but if you’re really craving something and you cave, don’t beat yourself up!
  5. Ginger: Ginger is a lifesaver during the first trimester, it helps with nausea and can be taken in so many different forms.  Throw fresh ginger in your smoothie, make ginger tea, drink ginger ale or just have a ginger candy.  The possibilities are endless.
  6. Exercise: The last thing you want to do is exercise, I know, but exercise really helps fight fatigue and the good old first trimester blues.  Get active! Go for a quick walk around the block or go for a hike, but if you really can’t even think about exercising, just remember that’s what the second trimester is for.
  7. Prenatal Vitamins: when you’re feeling so blah and all you’ve eaten the whole day is crackers, having taken your prenatal vitamins makes everything better during the first trimester, it gives baby all he or she needs and gives you ease of mind.  Find a prenatal vitamin that works for you.
  8. Protein: Getting enough protein in pregnancy is very important and when you’re not feeling your best it can be really hard.  Drinking my protein shake will give you that boost you need, and because its a thinner shake you don’t have to worry about the consistency making you gag.  If you can’t drink a shake dip your crackers in peanut butter or have a handful of nuts during the day.
