Chocolate Pregnancy Shake

Yes, I’m still pregnant and after a very positive midwife appointment I’m feeling really good again. ¬†Baby is in a good position, I’m healthy, baby is not too big and the midwife and I both decided that baby should come when the baby is done developing and is ready to face the big scary world. ¬†While I wait I’m just going to get enough sleep, meditate and go for walks until baby is ready to meet us.

I feel healthier than ever during this pregnancy, I’ve really been making a conscious effort to eat healthy, avoid anything that doesn’t ¬†make me feel like the glowing pregnant woman I deserve to be and just give my baby the best food I can possibly give him/her. ¬†I’ve mostly just been craving sweet delicious things this pregnancy, which has been strange for me, because I’m more of a savoury kind of gal, but I felt like a fruit junky and have had weird cravings for donuts and cake. ¬†You don’t know how strong you are until you prove to yourself that you WONT touch that cake. ¬†To keep my sugar cravings ¬†in control, I came up with the most delicious medjool date chocolate shake, filled with good for you ingredients, protein and all those yummy dates that’s suppose to help shorten your labour, ¬†whats not to love and I mean it just tastes so good. ¬†Way better than the best chocolate shake I’ve ever had and that’s saying something, because this is the best chocolate shake I’ve ever had.

WHY EAT DATES DURING PREGNANCY

The number one reason should be that its really delicious! filled with nutrients, fibre (what every pregnant woman needs more of), a great source of potassium , iron, anti oxidants and helps regulate blood pressure.  It will also give you that energy boost you so desperately crave during pregnancy, but even with all those amazing benefits the best thing about dates for a pregnant lady is.

It will help shorten labour.  Yes, you read that right!  Women who ate 6 dates a day during their ninth month of pregnancy had good progression during labour.  They were also more dilated on arrival to hospital and laboured for 7 hours or less.  Dates have a compound in them that mimics the hormone oxytocin  which causes contractions.

Hopefully all my religious date eating pays of during labour.

Hi friends! How was your weekend? We’ve been busy, busy, busy! We’ve been in a slight panic mode, when we realised we basically have a month left before this baby arrives! ¬†We still have so much to do and get, but Cape Town really does not make it easy for us. Everything closes before 2 on a Saturday or requires a long commute to get anything, and shopping on week days is just not an option for us, work keeps us busy! ¬†Sundays we attend three hours of church that can sometimes feel like a million hours, and keeping the Sabbath day holy after that, doesn’t give us much time to sort out everything on our to do list!

We’ve started ordering stuff from amazon, just because delivery is faster than most of the South African online shopping experiences we’ve had! For all our organic needs we order from faithful to nature, they have been amazing and delivered within a day! Like it should be! ¬†Stocking up on our biodegradable diapers has been easy with them by our side!

At my last midwife appointment, my midwife asked me if I’m ready for labour and I’m so ready, I don’t think she usually hears first time moms, being excited about labour. I feel like the pain we endure as expecting mothers in labour, prepares us, and shows us how strong we really are and that we can do this motherhood thing, but I’ll let you know how I feel when I’m actually in labour. ¬† I’ve given Carl the heads up about the transitioning period and told him he should just remember I love him before I get mean, and he should just keep encouraging me if I feel like giving up. ¬† I can’t wait to meet our little baby in a month, our midwife told us Baby A is thin and long, with a small head, after seeing Carl’s giant head as a baby and how he seemed to have grown into it as he got older, I’ve been really worried about what I’m in for, the head thing was a bit of a relief!

Happy Monday, Hope everyone has a lovely week and gets to everything they need to get done this week!.

^^ Hocus Pocus and a delicious finger cookie for this pregnant lady.

Happy Halloween!  How was your weekend? did you guys get up to anything fun and halloweeny?  I made some ghost brownies and fingers, we had a rather relaxed weekend, kind of our first one since moving into our new place.  It felt so good to finally take a bit of a breather and just enjoy our new home.  The best medicine is just to lie in bed a little longer on the weekend, instead of just rushing around to get stuff done!

Electrolyte Almost Instant Lemon Ice Cream

Lemon ice cream sure doesn’t have the same ring to it as lemon sorbet does? Is it just me or does it just sound completely wrong? Lemon Ice cream kind of sounds gross, but lemon sorbet….Man, now that sounds refreshing. ¬†After everything I just said I still decided to go with lemon ice cream in my title, because this is just so much more than a silly sorbet. ¬†Its creamy, filled with flavour and comes together almost instantly, if like me you always have a crazy amount of bananas in your freezer, please tell me I’m not the only one! ¬†I love having frozen banana chunks readily available, who knows when I feel like a cold smoothie, ¬†I ¬†want to chomp on a frozen banana or when I crave some delicious nice cream. ¬† When those days hit, I’m always prepared with all the bananas you will find in my freezer.

I’ve had a couple of days where I’ve suffered from some low blood pressure during this pregnancy. ¬†Its usually when I’ve gone for an unplanned longer than usual walk or forgot that adding salt to your food is a good thing. ¬†In those instances I’ve even been tempted to look twice at an electrolyte drink. ¬†Electrolyte drinks are just filled with so many things that I don’t even like looking at and is just a whole lot of sugar. ¬† When in fact we just need to replenish our body with a little bit of salt, specifically our bodies need the ions in salt. Electrolytes are important, because they are what your cells use to maintain voltages across the cell membranes and to carry electrical impulses to other cells. ¬†When we exercise a lot we usually lose sodium and potassium in our sweat and this little frozen treat is made up of those two vital ingredients.

Directions

What I ate: 31 Weeks Pregnant

I’ve been TIRED lately! Like getting up in the morning only to want to get back into bed kind of tired. ¬†I really don’t have a reason to be tired except I’m making a human that loves to kick me from all angles. ¬†I swear this baby just loves to flip around and kick me in new and interesting places all the time. ¬†We’ve started going for early morning walks around our neighbourhood to get some time together and really enjoy the outdoors before it gets unbearably hot. ¬†On our little walk we discovered the cutest little park, if it wasn’t for all the tagging on everything, it would look like the most magical park in all the land. ¬†Little squirrels and cute little fluffy animals running around playing on the big trees, green grass that you just want to roll in an regret later and a large slide that I want to take for a spin!

I’m still feeling pretty good, I mean I’m tired, but I’m not exhausted. ¬†Its a bearable tired that hits me occasionally, in reality I’m getting off lightly!

I’ve been feeling like a ball of stress and realised its not good for me or the baby, so I’m avoiding stressful situation and trying to meditate away everyone’s little pregnancy pokes. ¬†Lets get to what I’ve been eating.

BREAKFAST

Gluten Free Overnight Porridge IMG_4025new

^^ Not surprising, I’ve still been on my Iron rich overnight oats kick and Moringa coconut chia overnight porridge kick lately.

dsc_2430new unnamednew

^^ See I add more variety to my breakfast.  To the left raw buckwheat porridge with fruit, this is one of my favourite breakfast of all time now! To the the right a power green smoothie bowl topped with chocolate buckwheat granola, fruit and coconut.

Snack:

If I get snacky I still grab my omega peanut butter with added flaxseed oil for a little pick me up.

Lunch

img_4111new

^^ Still just eating my kale salad, baby gets angry when I don’t have my daily lunch kale salad.

Dinner

img_4347new img_4326new

^^ Dinner has been a whole lot of different things to the left a really  veggie cottage pie with spouted lentil a whole lot of veggies and topped with a broccoli, cauliflower and kale pureed topping.   To the right: a falafel bowl with spouted chickpeas, a homemade tahini dressing, salad stuff and a cauliflower kale rice.

img_4413new img_4407new

^^ Other nights we had a healthy sweet and sour stir fry with carrot noodles and a rocket, baby spinach nectarine salad to go with sprouted red lentil fritters.

cauliflower leek soup

^^ and I can’t forget this crazy good Cauliflower leek soup!

Snacks:

img_4502new img_4501new

^^ I’ve been making some healthy snacks on the go for quick snacking. ¬†On the left a gluten free, sugar free black bean, chia seed and hemp protein bar. ¬†So amazing! and to the right a flax seed date and black-strap molasses square, so good and even better for you, an easy way to get my 6 dates a day in.

img_4551new Rooibos Latte

^^ I finally found some watermelon and it was just the best thing ever! Now if I could only find mangoes my pregnancy cravings will be satisfied.  I also enjoy my little rooibos latte here and there.

Vegan Protein Shake

^^ Our blender has been acting up again, I guess its not suppose to withstand the daily abuse I put it through. ¬†So I’ve been having my Protein shake whenever I can. ¬†I get sad when I can’t have it everyday.

I’m feeling prepared mentally and physically for my home-birth and I’m getting more and more excited everyday to meet our little baby! ¬†Just need to finish the last bits of things and it will be smooth sailing from here on out!

What I ate: 28 Weeks Pregnant

I can’t believe how fast this pregnancy is flying by, I feel like I need to update and talk more about it before its all over and the lack of sleep thanks to a cute little newborn makes me all crazy and frazzled.

I’ve cut a lot of food out of my diet since finding out I’m pregnant, I’ve figured out what works for me and what doesn’t work for me one bit. ¬†It all seems to be paying off, because I’m feeling great, have a lot of energy, I’m sleeping wonderfully and all my tests keep coming back great. ¬†A couple of things I’ve cut out is; sugar, the big bad culprit we all know is bad for us, but we just can’t get enough of it, I actually wasn’t eating that much sugar before we went to Ireland, but as soon as we arrived in Ireland it was like I just had to have all the sugar. ¬†All those delicious first world treats and candy I’ve never tried before had to be consumed. ¬†I don’t regret my Irish sugar binge one bit, but I’m so glad I’m off sugar again, it just makes me feel so much better and my skin just feels wonderful! I’ve also limited my fruit in take to 3 – 4 fruit a day. ¬†I got rid of most gluten, but kept rye bread in the mix, but I started getting severe heartburn from it from just one bite, so no more bread for me. ¬†I’ve started sprouting most of my grains and legumes for easier digestion, personally I never knew brown rice could be sprouted, but wow, does it improve the taste! ¬†and I’ve cut out soy, unless its fermented. Here is a look at what I’ve been eating.

BREAKFAST: Around 8 am

Gluten Free Overnight PorridgeIron rich Overnight Oats

I tried having a smoothie for breakfast, but it really just doesn’t work for me. ¬†It doesn’t fill me up or keep me going for long, also the consistency really gets me on an empty stomach. ¬†Instead I’ve been sticking to my Iron rich overnight oats or Grain free coconut flour overnight porridge filled with chia seeds, ground flax and hemp seeds. ¬†I top both of these with fruit and coconut yogurt. ¬†Its so good and keeps me going till around¬†12 pm – 1 pm. ¬†Overnight porridge is just so convenient, you add all your ingredients in a jar, shake it up and leave it in the fridge overnight. ¬†You wake up to a delicious, no hassle breakfast. ¬†Convenient.

Snack: 12 pm

Green smoothie

I don’t really feel snacky, the porridge really keeps me full and satisfied for a long time, but around 12 pm or 1 pm, I start feeling a bit of a hankering for food. I either have a green smoothie or a couple of spoons of my favourite oh mega peanut butter or nuts.

LUNCH 2 pm

Healthy nori wrap img_4111new

Kale salad to go

^^ Look how well it travels.

I don’t really stray to far from my trusty kale salad for lunch, its so easy to make. I usually make a big salad that last me the whole week, it keeps well and transports amazingly in a lunchbox. ¬†The kale salad consists of ¬†kale chopped finely and massaged with lemon juice, sprinkled with salt and an avocado smashed in. ¬†Topped with beetroot, carrot, tomatoes, celery, cucumber, peppers, roasted pumpkin seeds and lightly fried tempeh or walnut and mushroom meat. ¬†Other lunches I have; ¬†a nori wrap filled with sprouted beetroot hummus and vegetables. ¬†So yummy and filling.

Snack: 5 pm – 5 -30 pm

vegan protein shake

Like clock work I have my green protein shake at this time. ¬†I’ve started adding moringa leaf powder to it for added benefits. ¬†Moringa is just the best.

DINNER: 6:30 pm – 7 pm

img_4285new img_4202new

Amazing lentil soup

For dinner I’ve been having my Moroccan lentil soup, a coconut flour base pizza, with homemade sugar free Iron rich BBQ sauce topped with a lot of veggies. ¬†Burrito bowls made with cauliflower and broccoli rice, walnut meat and other veggies. ¬†and a lot more.

DESSERT:

img_4165new

I usually have one block of 85% or darker, dark chocolate or Frozen banana bites with date salted caramel.  I use the salted date sauce in my protein shake for extra date goodness.

Drinks : not mentioned is all the water I drink! ¬†I drink a lot of water some with lemon in it some just like that and occasionally I’ll have a rooibos tea latte. ¬†My dinners change, but breakfast and lunch stays the same! ¬†Not mentioned: I do take prenatal vitamins!

That’s just a quick peak into what I’m eating while pregnant.

^^ Beautiful sunset over the ocean after a visit to family.

How was your weekend? ¬†We’ve been walking and hiking all around Sea point and lions head, before we leave for our new place at the end of the month! ¬†We decided to visit a cute little strawberry farm I remember visiting as a child, they seem to have gone completely bonkers with the amount of scarecrows the have up, and I hope they don’t get any bird attacks with all those guys around, but who knows, birds do what they want.

25 weeks pregnant and 2 days today.  WOW!  It feels like I woke up and my ribs somehow disappeared, baby has decided to move into my ribs and kick as hard as possible all the time.    Baby seems to be having a lot of fun in my womb and likes throwing parties and mosh pits on the inside daily.

All I want for Christmas…

We’ve been keeping a big secret! Can you guess what it is? 22 December we’re making our little family a little bigger. ¬†We’re expecting a baby! ¬†Keeping the baby secret so long has been pure bliss for us we really wanted to keep such a joyous moment happy and decided not to tell family ¬†until we had our 20 week scan to make sure everything was good¬†with the baby. ¬†We’ve had all our happy moments ruined so far, so it was nice having the time to enjoy the happiness together without¬†being lectured at 29.

We are over the moon excited! We’ve decided not to¬†find out the baby’s gender in hopes of having everything be a little more gender neutral and its just fun having a little surprise to look forward too. ¬†We’ve been collecting little baby clothes, and I have to tell you guys, I don’t think its that small? I keep looking at the newborn clothes and thinking how is that suppose to come out of me! ¬†It just doesn’t seem right. ¬† We have a name picked out for a boy and girl, so we are ready to go go go!

Surprisingly the blanket in the photo is for a girl, its suppose to match the northern lights, can you see it?¬†I still have to make a blanket for a boy, but I’ve just been so busy I haven’t had time to go get wool and get crocheting¬†! ¬†I’m really excited for baby A’s arrival in the world and this little blessing to fill our hearts with even more joy and love. ¬† I can’t wait to meet you in December little one! From the ultrasound we could see this baby is going to be a little busy body and I can’t wait to be able to hold this little wiggler! ¬†We love you dearly already.
