Green Vanilla Protein Shake (vegan)

I’ve been OBSESSED with protein shakes during this pregnancy.  I made three different variations that I have according to my mood, and I’m still not sure which one is my favourite so far.  The chocolate one is yummy chocolate, the strawberry one is just amazing and the green vanilla one is just soooo good.

Getting healthy protein during this pregnancy has been very important to me and baby, this protein shake keeps me going and gives me the energy boost I need to continue with my day without getting snappy.  The average woman should take about 46 grams of protein a day and during pregnancy you need about 70 grams of protein a day, that’s almost double!  If you’re a little exercise nut and have been guzzling down your protein shakes before you ever got pregnant you will know how important protein is for you and muscle building.  Protein is essential during pregnancy, because it does most of the heavy lifting (pun intended)  in the cells, structure, function and regulations for tissues and organs.  Getting high quality protein is obviously very important for you regardless if you’re pregnant or not.

BENEFITS OF DATES

Dates are filled with good sugar that helps keep you energised for longer, they are also filled with protein, fibre, folate, vitamins, iron and they will apparently help shorten your labour and avoid having to be induced.

BENEFITS OF CHIA SEEDS

By now we all know chia seeds is one of the best superfoods around, if you didn’t, well shame on you.  These little seeds are filled with protein, healthy omega 3 fats, fibre and is slow releasing energy to really keep you going during pregnancy.

BENEFITS OF SPINACH

Popeye didn’t get an energy boost after eating a can of spinach for nothing! I don’t recommend eating canned spinach, but throwing some spinach into your protein shake is sure to give you all the same benefits.  Spinach is filled with folic acid, protein, iron, antioxidants and vitamins.  It also has a neutral taste so you wont even notice it in your shake.  Except for the colour.

BENEFITS OF HEMP SEED PROTEIN POWDER

Hemp seeds are one of nature’s best sources of plant based protein and contains 20 amino acids, this contains 9 essential amino acids which our bodies can’t make by its self.  It also contains vitamins and minerals, on top of being such a great protein house.

BENEFITS OF CINNAMON

Not only does it taste good on your pancakes, but cinnamon is great for lowering your blood sugar levels, its loaded with antioxidants and helps fight infections in the body.

Hello friends! How was your weekend? Can you believe its already August, I can’t believe how fast this year has just flown by.  We celebrated our first wedding anniversary by taking a drive into the countryside of Cape town, we found the sweetest little town to walk around in and feel all giddy, I was really surprised by all the restaurants serving vegan friendly meals, its something you don’t often see in small towns! We are still looking for a perfect print to order, so nothing on the first year wedding anniversary gift front yet, but we will find the perfect print eventually, I hope.

Beach Days

The one thing about Cape town that everyone should know is, that everyday is a a beach day here.  Its never that cold, even on the coldest day all I’ve needed was a thin jumper and maybe a scarf, because scarves bring any outfit together, right?  And sometimes there is no need for a jumper at all! Cape town really struggles to do winter, its always trying to force its hand by showing signs of summer.  I’ve really enjoyed all the flowers out and the butterflies dancing from one flower to another.  Even on the dreariest day, the sun will come out eventually and blind you with how blue the sky is.

Over the weekend we headed to fishhoek beach,  its got a wonderful little walk way that’s just filled with amazing scenery everywhere you look!  Except when you pass a really old, extremely sun damaged man, sun bathing in the tiniest speedo you’ve ever seen, then you try not to make eye contact while shuffling away fast.  Even the beach is beautifully sandy and not that packed; it just seems like the best place to play around and build some sandcastles.

Life around here is starting to pick up, things are cooling down and falling into place.  We drove around false bay, found a horrible medieval festival that was just embarrassing, walked around muizenberg, fish hoek, simon’ town and even went to the top of signal hill.  We tried to pack as much in as possible in over the weekend, seeing as Carl is working on international labor day! Our apartment is starting to look a lot like home, stacked full of our books and wall art.  Home is where ever you hang your wedding photo!

St Patrick’s Cathedral

Yes, another Dublin post! but I just had so much fun in Dublin, that I want all of you to buy a plane ticket to Ireland as you read this! Don’t even worry about the rain, its manageable.  Just get layering and grab your umbrella.

When we realized we only had a couple of days left in Dublin, we made a list of everything we still wanted to do, the list was long and we still didn’t manage to see everything, but hey, Dublin has not seen the last of us.  4 months was way too short to get to experience everything that Dublin has to offer.  One thing we really wanted to go see was St Patrick’s cathedral, and its easy to see why.  Its extremely beautiful! All the detailed carvings, amazing stained glass and just a general feeling of peace, makes me want to go back and make it my home somehow.

Walking around this beautiful place of worship makes you feel like architecture and has really gotten laid back.  I mean who is going to build me a house with such fine details?  One thing I have noticed in Ireland is that a lot of strange things go on sale…I saw the most amazing convent with wonderful grounds going for extra cheap in county Cork so maybe one day I could make my holiday home a cathedral, it won’t be St Patrick’s Cathedral, but it would be something I could work with.

Oh deer, its Phoenix Park

The other day we decided to get ourselves back to Phoenix Park, this time with some carrots in our bag and a less frightened attitude.  I tend not to trust skittish animals, with fighting weapons on their heads,  but we persevered and had an incredible day.

Phoenix park is an amazing park its incredibly huge and amazing.  Its filled with wonderful things to explore including the Wellington Monument and the popes cross. If you are into monstrous towering things, these two things will make you gasp!  We ended up having a small picnic by the cross,  bringing a packed lunch is so old school, but so worth it, you never know where you will have an impromptu picnic.  With all the walking we do in Dublin we are ravenous almost all the time so we have some kind of treat with us at all times. You never want to be hangry when you have an hour walk back home, your husband will start looking like a monster that’s starving you after a while.

We skipped the first herd of deer, because they looked rather fat with the amount of carrots they’ve been fed and went exploring, Carl decided to try his tracking skills and assured me only one deer passed through the wooded area, while I was pointing towards the 30 deer just relaxing on a rugby field.  These deer seemed to not have had the sweet taste of carrot in a long time and came rushing towards us, while I desperately tried to get a carrot out in time.  Getting surrounded by deer is not fun, but fun all at the same time.  I did learn to get out of a sticky situation with greedy deer is to treat them like dogs and throw carrots like a ball, they go running after it, while you can make a clear run out of there.
