If this set of photos were an art exhibition, it would be called a boy and his cracker. The love that one boy has for his crackers. Continue reading
Arren has really found his voice these last couple of weeks and boy, does he love to let everyone know that he has arrived.

When I think about meatballs I automatically think about my Grandmother. Days spent in the kitchen making meatballs, peeling potatoes and getting banned from peeling potatoes, because the potato skin would contain most of the potato. Continue reading

Cloth diapering seems like such an old fashioned notion. Something that our grandmothers used to do. Big white cloths that had to be folded and pinned with a safety pin and the whole thing would be covered in diaper cover in hopes of making it look a little more attractive. These days cloth diapers have gone from being something that’s incredibly inconvenient to amazingly aesthetically pleasing. Its not just all about looks though, cloth diapers have come a long way and now is a pretty, convenient option that’s way easier on the planet, but also easier on baby’s bum.
When I first found out about Arren making a little home in my body, I knew that I wanted to cloth diaper. I wanted to have a lighter footprint on the planet and Carl loved all the money we would be saving. As my due date approached and I started thinking about how tired and love struck I was going to be in the first couple of weeks I started getting a little scared. No one wants to wash a crap load (pun intended) of laundry when you’ve got a fresh little poop monster on your hands. That’s why we also got a bunch of bio degradable disposable diapers to go along with the cloth diapers. I’m really happy that we had them on hand they were great! They fit Arren really well and we got to throw away the gross black poop stage diapers!
As soon as we started on the cloth diapers I was sad that we didn’t start sooner! First of all he looks so cute in all the different colours. He’s got a colour for every mood. We even have a cute little pink diaper that he looks so punk rock in. He seems so excited every time he sees pink! He also seems happier in his cloth diapers, he doesn’t mind peeing in his diapers, doesn’t get diaper rash in them because it never really leaves him wet and he sleeps in longer stretches at night because he’s never that wet.
CLOTH DIAPER 101 TIPS AND TRICKS
- Find a brand you like: We have two sets of diapers. The one batch we got second hand and the other is a cloth diaper brand called biddykins. The second hand brand is terrible! they fit a bit strangely and the insert doesn’t really do anything. We double up on these diapers and that took away the problem, but they still fit a bit weird. The second brand Biddykins, is just AMAZING. We just love them so much, the quality, the inserts, the cute prints and the price is just the best. Always read the reviews of a cloth diaper brand, that’s the best way to find a good brand and have an idea of what people think of them.
- Washing: I wash the diapers with all Arren’s clothes. I’ve even used a 30 minute cycle without having a stain problem. If it seems a bit discoloured I hang them up outside to get naturally bleached by the sun. It works perfectly! It also works on white clothes.
- Tea tree essential oil: I don’t think the diapers smell that bad in a diaper bin, but we throw tea tree oil in the bucket to prevent odour. This also works great for any bin.
- Make sure it fits everywhere and doesn’t have any escape holes for bodily fluids. Its easy to clip these diapers on, but taking the time to see if its tighter is for your best interest.
- The booster pad matters! Having a good booster pad makes your diaper experience that much better.
- Don’t be freaked out at the cost: Cloth diapering saves money! When you buy your first pack it doesn’t seem that way, but this is a once off cost and that once you have them you have them. If you’re planning on having more than one child you wont have to buy more for your next baby.
- Cloth diapers can become an obsession. With all the cute prints its hard to stop buying new ones. I don’t see a good reason to stop because they are just that great, so I shall continue to shop until I drop. Or until I have no house left at all, and all my furniture is just covered in cloth diapers.
I’m just loving cloth diapering, seeing a happy baby is just the best and he just looks so cute how can I deny him of those things!
I’m all for anything that tastes like dessert for breakfast. Who isn’t? Am I right? Well back in the day I didn’t have much of a sweet tooth, actually I wasn’t much of a breakfast eater. You would think I would have been super skinny, but no! I wasn’t feeling my best back then ; skipping breakfast made me overeat during the day and because your body is in starvation mode from the lack of food during your sleep, your body clings on to any food and tries to fatten you up!
Now that I’ve embraced breakfast and started making an effort to eat it, I feel better than ever. Eating a healthy breakfast sets me up for a healthy day, I wont over eat as easily and I will want to put better fuel into my body and now that I have little Arren around, having energy is even more important. This little guy is like a workout that never stops! He only wants to be held by me, he loves his squat bounces a little bit too much and boy, is he getting heavy!
Having a dessert breakfast makes for a glorious start to the day! It makes eating with one hand a joy! Because if you could just pour it into your mouth you would, but I need to teach my son not to be a complete slob! So with a spoon it is.
Banoffee pie is a British classic. Usually filled with a lot of unhealthy ingredients, but this delicious treat is filled with a lot of good for you yummies! The delicious combination of banana, salted caramel and chia seeds will leave you wanting more, but keep you satisfied for a long time! Now that’s my kind of breakfast.
BANOFFE PIE OVERNIGHT OATS – Serves 2
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1 cup coconut milk – or non dairy milk of choice
- 3/4 cup water or more milk
- 2 tbsp liquid sweetener – or less the caramel sauce makes it sweet enough.
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 1/2 tbsp chia seeds or yogurt
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder – optional but a great added extra for protein
- Salted caramel Sauce
- 1 Banana sliced
Combine the oats, milk, water, sweetener, vanilla, chia seeds and vanilla protein powder in a jar. Cover and shake until well combined. Place in the fridge overnight.
The next morning combine the oats into two bowls ( if its a little bit too firm, add more milk, I like a creamier oats), Add salted caramel sauce to the oats. Be generous. Cover with sliced banana. If you want it to be even fancier top with grated chocolate. Serve immediately!
^^ Picnics on the beach.
^^ I wanted to feel how cold the water was without getting wet so I just stood there until a wave lapped at my feet. I kind of look like a child from behind….My workout pants seem to be getting baggier and baggier…..bad workout pants, you should stay up.

^^ Birds being dramatic.
^^ So many of them.
^^ my parents in law got me an early birthday present, the most amazing food processor/ blender ever. In an instant I had the most amazing sunflower butter without oil. It tastes so good and is so creamy.
^^ Made little drool bibs/neckerchiefs for the baby, because all babies needs to be gangsta while drooling.
Hi friends! How was your weekend? Is everyone still recovering from Thanksgiving binge eating? Over the weekend we decided to go for a little beach picnic we were all set to take a walk down to the beach, but I was standing in the sun really early in the morning by the way, sending someone a text I realised I might not make it back in this heat. It was like standing in an oven before 8 o clock in the morning. So we decided to drive to beach, when we got to the beach, it was insanely windy! Its one of the things I hate most about Cape Town, the fact that it can be so hot and the wind can be so cold, yet harsh that you just don’t know what to do. We powered through and continued as planned with our little picnic.
On Sunday we invited Carl’s parents over for lunch and I cooked up a mini feast. I warned Carl about the risk of eating large quantities of dairy and oil when he’s been on a clean eating diet, but he didn’t believe me, I couldn’t stop laughing when he got badly effected by it and wanted to vomit, while having a headache and stomach pains. It was a lovely weekend and we finally feel kind of ready for this baby to arrive! I can’t believe how in a couple of weeks I will be holding my little baby in my arms, while asking baby A, “why did you have to abuse mommy from the inside so badly?” I hope everyone has a great Monday and an even better week.
^^ Pretty flowers on our first walk around the new hood.
^^ Found this cute little conservation area close to our new house. We also found a huge snake that made me almost poop my pants.
^^ Green grass and mountains.
^^ We were really exhausted from moving from a top floor apartment, but we still took the time to go for a walk and really relax.
^^ Shrubbery everywhere.
^^ The wind was really intense and it was so humid and hot in this little conservation area it was such a drastic change.
^^ The beach close to our house.
^^ First selfie on the balcony.
Hello wonderful people! How are you all today? I hope you had a great weekend and your Monday goes by faster than it showed up!We finally moved into our new little house amongst the mountains, after a gruelling two days, thanks to the old tenants leaving this place in a horrid state and me going into must sanitise house completely for baby mode, we are finally a bit settled. I always assumed its etiquette to clean a house before you leave it? Apparently not. I’m usually 5 seconds away from leaving chocolates on the pillows for new tenants when I leave a place. With all the chaos and our internet not being set up yet we haven’t watched general conference yet, but with instagram always showing us little snippets it seems like a good one! I can’t wait to watch it.
This pregnancy has brought out a horrible monster inside of me, I just can’t stop ignorance and silly comments to do with the fact that we don’t want to know the baby’s gender, that we want to keep things gender neutral even though we’ve been getting boy coloured outfits that just boggles my mind and the fact that I don’t want kitschy character printed outfits. I never understand why people have to say obscene, hurtful, ignorant things and afterwards say they’re only joking, its like Freud says: There are no jokes. Well not in circumstances like this most of the time people just say what they want not worrying how it comes across just so they can cover it up with saying its a joke. Why can’t we all just be respectful? Is it really that hard? Pregnancy hormone rant over!
^^ Surprise beach days. Clear blue water in between the mountain.
^^ We weren’t dressed for the beach at all!
^^Trying to flatten my wind swept hair.
^^ Morning hikes. No time for make up when you need to get hiking.
^^ Pretty little flowers on our hike.
^^ We are moving at the end of this month, but that didn’t stop me from getting this sweet little bassinet.
^^ Lots of surfers….Not a lot of waves…
^^ I kept running around trying to find a perfect sized rock, Carl kept screaming after me to stop running.
^^ Flowers on the beach.
Hello friends! How was your weekend? We had a very active weekend of hiking, ocean time and getting some stuff for our baby. We’ve been trying to get a hike in every weekend and seeing how far we can go before my insane need to pee starts to kick in. Every weekend we get a little further and every return I tend to almost run home to the comfort of the loo. On Sunday we had big plans to go to this specific picnic area, but after getting lost, not being able to find a loo ANYWHERE, we somehow ended up driving along the ocean on the most magical ocean drive ever! Sometimes the things that aren’t planned work out even better. All the wild flowers all around the Cape has made even the most mundane tasks amazing.
