Silvermine Nature Reserve

On Saturday we headed to Silvermine Nature Reserve, after our initial plans didn’t work out according to plan. ¬†Cape town has been giving me a completely Mordor feeling, like I’m Frodo and I finally made it to mount doom. ¬†The fog horn that seems to be always going when I’m trying to sleep, the intense kelp smell and all the burn from the fires kind of give it that vibe. ¬†Its still pretty and I am a big fan of Tolkien, so it will do for now.

Walking around the reservoir is really lively with everyone gathering around to have a weekend BBQ.  We decided to walk the other route which was just as easy, its a perfect hike for walking dogs and little kiddies.  The little flowers all over is a joy to see.  We ended the hike off with some crackers and chat.  Like all hikes should end.

an instant of life captured for eternity

A common question we get asked in Dublin is ” why Dublin?!” Like Ireland is the worst place in the world to be. ¬†Mostly people are really horrified by the weather and say “you will get over it in a couple of months”, but for me the weather is absolutely perfect, the clearest blue skies with a crispness in the air that just can’t be beaten , the ever changing weather all in one day, its a whirlwind that I love, the beautiful grey days, and the slightest amounts of rain that’s great for walking in, to me its the best place ever! Sometimes you just have to get lost in the beauty of the little things, if you start looking around you will find tiny blessing all around, and to me, here in Dublin you don’t have to look really hard.

Build castles in the air

a day spend in Dalkey in the south of Dublin, is like building castle in the air, but daydreaming and reality go hand in hand in this little seaside town, with 7 castles all around and only one you can go into. ¬†A little place where a school, old age home and a building completely locked are all castles, making you wonder ” what wonderland did I just stumble across?” or ” what nightmare is this?, why can’t I go into them?” ¬†Dalkey, is a wonderful little town with panoramic sea views everywhere you look, and but just when you think this is so magical, ¬†you see a man walking around in a nude coloured thong, making all the magic disappear in a record speed, but if you really want to get a good view of all the strange thong men, then the best view in town is definitely at the James Joyce tower, its free and you get to see everything James Joyce. ¬†He seemed liked a typical troubled artist, seeing panthers and just being a horrible house guest, but all the best characters are a little bit strange.

Strolling around this little seaside town so close to Dublin, makes you feel like you’re in the cheesiest rom com in the whole world, but its worth it.

Walking Travels – an Irish walking adventure

Walking travel is definitely the slowest means of transport, unless you count a 26 stop bus for 7 km! With everyone wanting to get somewhere fast and experience everything in record speed, just to get back home and relax, walking travel is definitely not for everyone, but its worth it! You get to experience a town and really get into all those little nooks and crannies. ¬†Its also the best way to walk off all the delicious food you’ve been eating.

We’ve been walking miles upon miles, forgetting to take food and trying to eat a tofu horse when we get home, but its been really fun and also really cheap. ¬†We like things cheap here, so if we are able to walk it , we will and we shall! ¬† So off we would set with google maps in Carl’s trusty hands and my who cares if we get lost attitude, ready for any adventure that might come our way. ¬†Trying to really tone down our tourist vibe, by speaking in super hushed voices, to a point that we would have to read lips, but adventures are always had and things are always seen. ¬†Trying to take everything in and really get swept up by the beauty of Ireland.

IMG_0482new

^^ We don’t drink, but when you find the heineken factory, you have to take a photo. ¬†Walks in Cork City. ¬†I didn’t like Cork city much, but if we all liked all the same things the world would be a really boring place.

Do you want to go to the seaside?

You know what’s a good motto to live by? Just do it! Don’t wait for that perfect day to do something, or you might never end up doing it. ¬†That’s especially true here in Ireland. ¬†If you keep waiting for that perfect sunny day to get out you are going to surely miss out on a lot! ¬†It does get sunny here, but more often than not its raining, and boy, do I love it! Its so much easier to do stuff in colder weather, than in boiling hot weather. ¬†A little rain never hurt anyone and its rather romantic to take a stroll in the rain and just go explore. ¬†Ireland is green for a reason, it rains a lot! but that’s what makes it so beautiful to me, the beautiful grey skies, with the vivid greenery is like something out of a painting, and when the skies are blue, its bluer than the bluest, blue you’ve ever seen! Blue times infinity!

I’ve walked on a lot of beaches in my life, but the beaches in Ireland is where all Indie songs are probably written. ¬†You just expect to see someone breaking up, getting engaged or just throwing that engagement ring in the ocean, Yeah its that kind of ocean. ¬†The moody kind, where dogs come to poop and rocks look elegant. ¬†Where you can find seashells and tilling of a house from times past? ¬†So get your coat, grab an umbrella if you want and go for a walk!

Christmas Feasting!

Christmas is always a special time, and this year was definitely the best Christmas ever! ¬†The cold weather, being able to wear cosy clothes, fires and just a Christmas spirit that can’t be beaten. ¬†Ireland is magical, being here with the person I love most in this world has been wonderful. ¬†You don’t need to exchange gifts when you are married to the best present in the world. ¬†So cheesy, I know, I can literally spread that cheese on bread and enjoy a toasted sandwich! but its true, there is just something about blasting the Christmas carols and watching a lot of Christmas movies that brings out everything you are grateful for or just a whole lot of boring old person vibes. ¬†Whatever it is, I sure like it.

We celebrated with feasting on a lot of food, in true Christmas fashion, but can gluten free, sugar free and vegan really be binge eating? We actually ate small amounts and binge ate the rest the next day.  We are crazy like that.

IMG_0693new

^^ That awkward moment when your cauliflower looks like a roasted brain.  Roasted brain for dinner anyone? It was remarkable delicious.  I could do with another one right now.  Garlic and herb deliciousness right here.

IMG_0701new

^^ Cabbage rolls stuffed with rice and kidney beans, mashed parsnips, roasted cauliflower and a delicious Brussel sprouts  and kale stir fry.  Take me back now.

IMG_0705new

^^ Yes, Carl does work as an elf part time.  Christmas time he turns into the happiest elf around while I point at an empty chair inviting you over.

IMG_0707new

^^ Table manners nowhere in sight!

IMG_0709new

^^ When you can’t stop talking about your brain like centrepiece you start taking ridiculous photos. ¬†Obviously!

^^ Even cut up this looks good.

Christmas time, is always a great time to talk about future plans, what we want for the new year and projects in the making.  How was your Christmas?

Aerial Cableway Fun

Its always a big surprise to see a month coming to an end, when you don’t even know how it happened. Slow down year! I’m still trying to get to stuff! ¬†¬† We usually get our weekend fun on, but this aerial cableway has been on the cards for a while now. ¬†Finally we put all our maybes aside and just did it. ¬†It was extremely cloudy at our house, but the weather report said abundant sun for the cableway. ¬†We put our trust in technology and off we went. ¬†During the drive the clouds started disappearing the closer we got and bam. Abundant sun right in my face.

Harties aerial cableway

^^ Paying for our tickets….If you look really closely you can spot my hat in the reflection.

Harties cableway

^^ It sure goes up, up, up. ¬†I was kinda scared when we got out of the car. ¬†I’m not that great with heights or putting my faith in a man made contraption. ¬†You should see me on a plane!

Harties aerial cableway

^^ Everything you would ever want to know!

Harties aerial cableway

^^ It was reasonably empty when we paid for our tickets, but as soon as we got in the queue a whole bunch of school kids came from nowhere at all.  Must be hogwarts.

Harties aerial cableway

^^ We ended up sharing a cart with three 14 year old boys, so you know I put on my big girl pants and did not show any fear the entire way.  Carl and I must have made those poor boys real awkward.  Its a special gift, spreading awkwardness all around us.

harties aerial cableway

^^ The top is filled with panoramic views and a kaleidoscope of colours. ¬†Just look at that dam. ¬†Don’t you just want to go dip your toe into it? ¬†I do!

Harties cableway

^^ Its a really, really high edge.  EEEEEEEEEK

DSCF6957new

^^ Super windy, with a slight chance of hat getting blown off! I don’t know what I’m doing with my legs, lets just blame it on the wind.

DSCF6965new

^^ I carried my hat the rest of the way.

^^ They have a lot of eating option at the top. ¬†We laughed at the mexican pizza, they plop on chillies and call it mexican. ¬†We didn’t end up eating anything, we went home and made fresh spring rolls. Way more refreshing and yum!

^^ We got a cart all to ourselves on the way down.  My hat even got a seat.  Good hat.

Aerial cableway

^^ I took a lot of photos over my shoulder on the way down.

This was so much fun!

Anything fun you still want to do before the year is over?
