^^ I finally found a mango! My sister told me about a fruit stall selling mango and I couldn’t wait to get one! ¬†The beach and a mango, seems almost too good to be true.

Hi friends! How was your weekend? is everyone ready for thanksgiving/ friendsgiving? We’ve still been on a mad rush trying to get everything done before the baby arrives and getting all the herbs I need for my confinement. ¬†We want everything to be really well stocked so the confinement goes really smooth. ¬†With the mad rushing to sort out everything before baby, confinement for a month, resting and bonding with baby seems like pure bliss!

Hope everyone has a great week!

35 Week Pregnancy Update

The final countdown has begun! baby will be here in about a month and the time for panic has kicked in! ¬†I can’t believe how much we still need to get done and that we waited a bit too long with our second batch of cloth diapers. We found this amazing affordable cloth diaper company, that had really amazing packages for around the same price as what we bought our second hand cloth diapers for, but these diapers are brand new, comes in amazing colours and the reviews are just great, unfortunately with all the procrastination we were doing, most of the diapers are sold out! ¬†Let this be a lesson kids, never say you will buy something later, sometimes later is a little bit too late! ¬†We can’t seem to find another cloth diaper company that’s as affordable so we will have to stock up on more biodegradable diapers before baby A arrives.

I’ve also been in full nesting mode and nothing is surviving the rampage I’m on. ¬†I even started buffing Carl’s laptop clean. ¬†Yes, things have gotten out of hand.

35 weeks pregnant

^^ This baby is so high up.

After doing a lot of research, I’m always up for an experience; ¬†I’ve decided on doing a month of confinement when the baby arrives. ¬†The whole process makes a lot of sense to me, so I’ve been raiding all our Chinese grocers, ¬†stocking up on a lot of confinement herbs, I’m not going to go completely authentic in it, but I’ve made a couple of western adjustments to the diet and rules to suit my needs a little better. ¬†I’m really excited to try it out and have the month to bond with baby, while letting my body heal and putting heat back into my body after my home birth.

35 weeks pregnant

Speaking about home birth, I’ve finally started getting my home birth supplies! ¬†I was waiting until my last midwife appointment for them to tell me if everything is fine and that baby A is still in the head down position. ¬†Well I got the heads down, A okay I needed and just started buying all the “wonderful” incontinent supplies I needed! ¬†Nothing makes you feel like a grown up like standing in line with a trolley full of linen savers, adult diapers, a plastic fitted sheet, gauze and surgical spirits. ¬†The cashier must have been wondering what I’m up to!

35 weeks pregnant

How far along? 35 weeks! Almost time to meet this little baby.

35 weeks pregnant

Weight? I’ve actually been really consistent with my weight and kept losing weight or staying the same, I only gained some weight with my last appointment.

Cravings? Still craving watermelon, mangoes, pears, grapes and Ice. ¬†I’m about to hop on a plane in search of mangoes, I’m getting that desperate.

How I’m feeling? I’m feeling really prepared and ready to meet this baby! This last trimester has been a rough one! ¬†I’m constantly hungry and need to snack the whole time just to stay functional. ¬†To be honest I’m getting really tired of eating! I feel like I’m getting jaw muscles. ¬†I’ve still been eating healthy food, so no gluten, no sugar, clean eating meals that keep me going and doesn’t make me feel pooped. ¬†Even Carl loves this diet, he’s looking better than ever, his hair is shiny as can be and he seems to be losing wrinkles! ¬†I’m definitely going to continue eating this way when the baby arrives.

Sleep? I’m still sleeping pretty well, I just get up more often to use the loo, but I fall asleep almost instantly after.

Maternity Clothes? I’m wearing my maternity jeans often and a couple of dresses, but I’m mostly just wearing clothes I wore pre pregnancy.

Best Moment? Finishing up the baby mobile, painting the baby dresser and sorting out little things in the baby’s room. ¬†Finding out our baby’s got a small head.

Worst Moment? Getting the pregnancy rash on my tummy….Its so unpleasant, combine that with the unattractive veins popping out all over my body, it makes you realise anyone who ever said pregnancy was beautiful was a giant liar. ¬†I’ve been trying out mama naturals methods for getting rid of the rash and it seems to be working. ¬†I also got an allergic reaction at church that left me with a swollen face, thanks to all the proteas and fynbos flower arrangements all over the show. ¬†I’m allergic to South Africa’s national flowers, good job body.

Movement? So much movement! This baby doesn’t seem to like loud noises or people speaking in loud tones ( Shouting) and really lets me have it when I’m around anything baby doesn’t like.

I can’t wait to meet this little person soon!

^^ Geese ignoring Carl.

Hi friends! How was your weekend? We’ve been busy, busy, busy! We’ve been in a slight panic mode, when we realised we basically have a month left before this baby arrives! ¬†We still have so much to do and get, but Cape Town really does not make it easy for us. Everything closes before 2 on a Saturday or requires a long commute to get anything, and shopping on week days is just not an option for us, work keeps us busy! ¬†Sundays we attend three hours of church that can sometimes feel like a million hours, and keeping the Sabbath day holy after that, doesn’t give us much time to sort out everything on our to do list!

We’ve started ordering stuff from amazon, just because delivery is faster than most of the South African online shopping experiences we’ve had! For all our organic needs we order from faithful to nature, they have been amazing and delivered within a day! Like it should be! ¬†Stocking up on our biodegradable diapers has been easy with them by our side!

At my last midwife appointment, my midwife asked me if I’m ready for labour and I’m so ready, I don’t think she usually hears first time moms, being excited about labour. I feel like the pain we endure as expecting mothers in labour, prepares us, and shows us how strong we really are and that we can do this motherhood thing, but I’ll let you know how I feel when I’m actually in labour. ¬† I’ve given Carl the heads up about the transitioning period and told him he should just remember I love him before I get mean, and he should just keep encouraging me if I feel like giving up. ¬† I can’t wait to meet our little baby in a month, our midwife told us Baby A is thin and long, with a small head, after seeing Carl’s giant head as a baby and how he seemed to have grown into it as he got older, I’ve been really worried about what I’m in for, the head thing was a bit of a relief!

Happy Monday, Hope everyone has a lovely week and gets to everything they need to get done this week!.

Gluten Free Sugar Free Pumpkin Pie bars

I’ve been on a complete pumpkin kick lately! I just want to make everything pumpkin-y. ¬†Pumpkin cookies, pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin lattes, pumpkin smoothies, pumpkin cupcakes, and of course these amazing pumpkin pie bars! ¬†When I started making these I knew the gingery crust would pair perfectly with the smooth custardy goodness of the pumpkin filling, when I made the pumpkin filling and tried it, it actually took all the willpower a heavily pregnant woman could take not to just take the filling, go hide in the closet and just eat the entire bowl, that’s how good it is!

img_4787new

I’m glad I didn’t waste all the filling on my instant gratification need and decided this needs to be bars, because WOWZA! I just can’t get enough of these things, the fact that I don’t have any left kind of makes me want to cry, call it pregnancy hormones or the real life truth that there are no pumpkin pie bars in my fridge, maybe its just a combination of both? ¬†What ever it is, all I know is I need to make more. STAT!

img_4767new

What makes these extra special? Is the fact that’s its sugar free and gluten free, you don’t ¬†even need to feel guilty while binge eating these. ¬†The coconut flour ginger crust reminds me of a graham cracker or gingersnap cookie, paired with the smooth pumpkin filling and just the perfect touch of coconut whipped cream with 1/2 tsp of cardamom added to the mix, you’re in for a whirlwind of yum!

Place everything in your blender and blend until well combined.  Taste the mixture and adjust seasoning to your preference.    Pour the filling into the prepared crust and spread it around evenly.

^^ The guinea fowl family on our walk again, these guys really know how to make you feel bad, when you try to pass them, and they all scatter like you’re the biggest murderer on this planet.

Hi friends! ¬†Whew! Its been a couple of days hasn’t it? ¬†I’ve just been so busy with all lives demands and trying to get everything ready for the baby! I still feel like I have so much to do and buy! ¬†I’m starting to feel just a tad overwhelmed, but I downloaded the hypnobabies app on my phone and its just the best thing to listen to!

I feel like this week has been a whirlwind for the entire world……I try to keep my blog neutral and easy, but what is going on with the world? I’m still in so much shock about the US elections and the effect this will have on all the other countries and I just can’t believe people chose fear again so soon after brexit. ¬†In the beginning of the year I couldn’t wait to see what humans were going to do next and now, I’m like how is such a racist, sexist, completely insane man, going to be president? but who knows maybe this will be the time were people stand together and realise fear is not the answer, we should live with kindness and treat people kindly. ¬† Okay! Rant over! ¬†I felt like I needed to say something about all the craziness right now! ¬†Things will get better, the earth is too beautiful to not care!

Healthy Chocolate Coconut Overnight Porridge ( Vegan / Gluten Free)

I’ve been on a serious breakfast kick lately. ¬†Give me anything that’s fast, that will keep me going until the afternoon and I’m willing to give it a try. ¬†Right now I’m in the serious grazing part of my pregnancy, I never feel completely full and I’m always on the look out for my next snack and when I can’t have it immediately I feel like a complete wreck. ¬† If it didn’t make me feel like a completely irrational drama queen you would probably find me curled up in ball wondering what did I do to deserve such a food-less world even if the fridge is completely stocked, I just have to make something.

That’s why I’ve been going crazy for anything overnight, put things in a jar, shake it up and forget about it until morning. ¬†At one point I felt like I was a little bit too addicted to my iron rich overnight oats, instead of calling the overnight oats helpline for addiction I decided I need to add some variety to my mornings, but yet be filling enough not to make me sulky in public when I get hangry 15 minutes later, it should be filled with protein and just make me feel good while eating it. ¬†That’s how this gluten free, coconut flour, chocolate-y slice of heaven in a jar was created. ¬†Filled with a whole lot of good for you ingredients, like ground flax seeds, chia seeds, banana, protein powder and really yummy coconut flour, how can you go wrong with something that’s just so right.

Coconut flour overnight porridge

A word of advice, don’t be all willy nilly with your coconut flour, otherwise you might end up with coconut flour-aggedon. ¬†The one evening I felt a little tired and didn’t count my tbsp properly, and because ¬†coconut flour is just as hungry as I am, I ended up with 3 days worth of porridge for 2 people. ¬†I wasn’t complaining.

CHOCOLATE COCONUT FLOUR OVERNIGHT PORRIDGEserves two hangry people

img_4670new

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp coconut flour
  • 3-4 tbsp chia seeds ( depends how thick you want it
  • 1 tbsp ground flax seeds
  • 1/8 tsp Himalayan salt
  • 1-2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 overripe banana, mashed into a puree or a normal yellow banana blended smooth
  • 2 tbsp hemp seed powder (optional)
  • 1 cup non dairy milk
  • 3/4 cup water
  • sweetener of choice ¬†( I cut up some dates really small or add a couple of dates while blending the banana for a sweetener)

Directions

Mix the dry ingredients into a big enough jar, or two smaller jars.

Stir in the milk, water, banana and vanilla.  Stir well until all the coconut flour clumps are gone.  Or shake vigorously with the lid tightly sealed.

Place in the fridge overnight.

Coconut flour Overnight Porridge

Remove from fridge, if its a little bit too thick add more milk till desired consistency and serve with your favourite porridge toppings, I would suggest a drizzle of nut butter, almonds, yogurt, fruit and a drizzle of sweetener. ¬†Sit back and enjoy your healthy, yet decadent dessert….. I mean breakfast.

Happy Halloween!  How was your weekend? did you guys get up to anything fun and halloweeny?  I made some ghost brownies and fingers, we had a rather relaxed weekend, kind of our first one since moving into our new place.  It felt so good to finally take a bit of a breather and just enjoy our new home.  The best medicine is just to lie in bed a little longer on the weekend, instead of just rushing around to get stuff done!

Tips for dealing with stress during pregnancy

We all experience stress in our lives from time to time, but constant stress is not healthy and stressing during pregnancy can be linked to preterm labour and a lower birth weight, I seriously read that and think “I can’t believe with statements like that, that everyone expects me to be calm”. ¬†Stress during pregnancy is just the worst, because most of the time with the insane amount of hormones swimming around your body trying to make you emotional for silly things you end up crying and feeling horrible about everything. ¬†I’m your typical type A personality and we all know that stands for typical type Anal about everything personality. ¬†I like things to get done and when it doesn’t I start wondering how people can live in such an unorganised world! ¬†but the world is unorganised and that’s one of the reasons its a wonderful adventure to be on, so here is some of my tips to just relax and de-stress yourself during pregnancy.

TIPS FOR DEALING WITH STRESS DURING PREGNANCY

dsc_2681newpregnanc

  1. Relax: This is one I have a hard time with, there is just so much to do all the time and allowing myself some time to unwind when so much still needs to get done has been hard. ¬†Sometimes I kind of forget I’m pregnant, but pregnancy is hard on your body and its just something you have to embrace. ¬†Enjoy some me time, put your feet up and forget about everything that needs to get done. Tomorrow is another day!
  2. Get outside: ¬†I’ve traded in my pregnancy workout for daily walks instead. ¬†Getting outside when I can really gives me some time to clear my head. ¬†The fresh air seems to clear up any mind fogginess.
  3. Ask for help: Your husband/partner/friend is not a mind reader, most of the time they can’t tell we need help; especially if we keep going on like we’re completely fine. ¬†Ask your husband for a little more help around the house or anything you really need, they will understand and be happy to help. ¬†I’ve been having moments when I’m just too tired to make dinner after a long day, at first I got angry at the fact that Carl can’t make anything edible, after that I decided to teach him how to cook and the basics of cooking. ¬†It seems like a lot of work, but he seems to be enjoying it and I get to delegate and help him be able to feed himself a healthy meal when I’m not around. Every problem has a solution when you have a clear head and don’t get mad about it. ¬†Figure it out!
  4. Meditate: Meditation is a hard one for me, I can never get my mind silent enough to be able to just relax! Somehow, lately with construction happening in the front of us and to the side, with the loudest construction workers screaming at each other and my peak stress level jumping through the roof I managed to do my own kind of meditation. ¬†I put on some music and just have a moment on my yoga mat, doing some prenatal yoga, and a little bit of mind clearing meditation. ¬†Find your own kind of meditation, for some people its getting in the zone and cleaning their house, who knows how you can personally find your inner peace. ¬†I feel like I’m becoming a true yogi with that statement. ¬†Namaste.
  5. Treat yo’self: ¬†With everything revolving around your unborn child at the moment its easy to forget to take care of yourself. ¬†It can be something as simple as taking a hot bath and just relaxing or it can be buying yourself something that makes you feel beautiful while being pregnant ( sometimes that feels like a difficult task). ¬†For me it was splurging on a pair of amazing maternity pants, that actually fit properly and doesn’t have that hint of hideousness that comes with maternity clothes.
  6. Educate yourself: Read all the books, google, google, google, talk to friends with babies or your midwife/obgyn, just find out everything you need to know or are concerned about. ¬†At the same time, don’t get too scared about the what if’s, because the internet will always tell you something simple is a tumour, educate yourself, but take everything with a grain of salt. If you’re concerned ask your obgyn, they will most likely put your mind at ease. ¬†Now go feed your growing tumour baby. ¬†Thanks internet.
  7. People will give you their advice: ¬†Sometimes the biggest stress is a good meaning, slightly mean person who tells you what you’re doing is wrong, trust that what you’re doing is the best way for YOU and do it! ¬†Laugh all the silly comments off.
  8. Avoid trigger people or situations: if you feel overly stressed out around a certain situation, avoid it! Be a little selfish, you are growing a baby! This is the time you should easily be able to avoid something for the good of your baby and yourself.
  9. Talk to someone: Sometimes the best thing you can do is just talk to someone you trust about all your concerns, get it all out and let them tell you, you’re being silly.
  10. Eat a balanced diet: Drink plenty of water during pregnancy to lessen pregnancy symptoms, eat food that will make you feel good, instead of feel good right now.
  11. Trust that everything will work out the way its supposed to.  Believe in Gods plan and have faith in yourself.

I hope these tips will help any soon to be mama out there be able to start relaxing and de-stressing.  Go on! Go take that bath/ binge watch netflix you deserve it!

^^ Things are getting bumpy! Its been weird seeing some peoples reaction to my pregnancy. ¬†From comments to it at supermarkets, to people just staring at my bump like they didn’t know humans came out of other humans. ¬†Its been really funny.

Hi friends! How was your weekend? did you get up to anything? ¬†We wen’t on a shopping trip to get our monthly food in hopes of avoiding our local supermarket for 2 – 3 weeks. ¬†It gets way to crazy in that area when people get paid! ¬†Instead we’ve decided to call our next two weekend, maintenance weekends. ¬† Our little home was left in a state and we haven’t really gotten down to the real down and dirty cleaning. ¬†We have to wash all the windows and mow the lawn of the most insanely overgrown garden ever!

We’ve been going for daily walks together that feels like the best therapy ever. ¬†Our morning talks are just the best, even if I hate Carl a bit every morning when he forces me to get up for walkies, like a dog, but by the end of the walk I feel so refreshed! ¬†Hope everyone’s week is lovely!

What I ate: 31 Weeks Pregnant

I’ve been TIRED lately! Like getting up in the morning only to want to get back into bed kind of tired. ¬†I really don’t have a reason to be tired except I’m making a human that loves to kick me from all angles. ¬†I swear this baby just loves to flip around and kick me in new and interesting places all the time. ¬†We’ve started going for early morning walks around our neighbourhood to get some time together and really enjoy the outdoors before it gets unbearably hot. ¬†On our little walk we discovered the cutest little park, if it wasn’t for all the tagging on everything, it would look like the most magical park in all the land. ¬†Little squirrels and cute little fluffy animals running around playing on the big trees, green grass that you just want to roll in an regret later and a large slide that I want to take for a spin!

I’m still feeling pretty good, I mean I’m tired, but I’m not exhausted. ¬†Its a bearable tired that hits me occasionally, in reality I’m getting off lightly!

I’ve been feeling like a ball of stress and realised its not good for me or the baby, so I’m avoiding stressful situation and trying to meditate away everyone’s little pregnancy pokes. ¬†Lets get to what I’ve been eating.

BREAKFAST

Gluten Free Overnight Porridge IMG_4025new

^^ Not surprising, I’ve still been on my Iron rich overnight oats kick and Moringa coconut chia overnight porridge kick lately.

dsc_2430new unnamednew

^^ See I add more variety to my breakfast.  To the left raw buckwheat porridge with fruit, this is one of my favourite breakfast of all time now! To the the right a power green smoothie bowl topped with chocolate buckwheat granola, fruit and coconut.

Snack:

If I get snacky I still grab my omega peanut butter with added flaxseed oil for a little pick me up.

Lunch

img_4111new

^^ Still just eating my kale salad, baby gets angry when I don’t have my daily lunch kale salad.

Dinner

img_4347new img_4326new

^^ Dinner has been a whole lot of different things to the left a really  veggie cottage pie with spouted lentil a whole lot of veggies and topped with a broccoli, cauliflower and kale pureed topping.   To the right: a falafel bowl with spouted chickpeas, a homemade tahini dressing, salad stuff and a cauliflower kale rice.

img_4413new img_4407new

^^ Other nights we had a healthy sweet and sour stir fry with carrot noodles and a rocket, baby spinach nectarine salad to go with sprouted red lentil fritters.

cauliflower leek soup

^^ and I can’t forget this crazy good Cauliflower leek soup!

Snacks:

img_4502new img_4501new

^^ I’ve been making some healthy snacks on the go for quick snacking. ¬†On the left a gluten free, sugar free black bean, chia seed and hemp protein bar. ¬†So amazing! and to the right a flax seed date and black-strap molasses square, so good and even better for you, an easy way to get my 6 dates a day in.

img_4551new Rooibos Latte

^^ I finally found some watermelon and it was just the best thing ever! Now if I could only find mangoes my pregnancy cravings will be satisfied.  I also enjoy my little rooibos latte here and there.

Vegan Protein Shake

^^ Our blender has been acting up again, I guess its not suppose to withstand the daily abuse I put it through. ¬†So I’ve been having my Protein shake whenever I can. ¬†I get sad when I can’t have it everyday.

I’m feeling prepared mentally and physically for my home-birth and I’m getting more and more excited everyday to meet our little baby! ¬†Just need to finish the last bits of things and it will be smooth sailing from here on out!
