Company’s Gardens

Company’s Garden is settled right in the heart of the city, and is a huge park with a rose garden, amazing vegetable garden and lots more. ¬†You can’t forget to buy a pack of peanuts to feed to the crazy amount of squirrels following you around. It doesn’t feel all magical and Disney like as Ireland having squirrels following you around, these squirrels seemed rough and like they would take your wallet to go buy their own peanuts. ¬†The views of table mountain is amazing from the gardens.

The gardens were established in 1650’s by Dutch settlers and has South Africa’s first cultivated pear tree that has stood in the gardens since 1652.

Personally the park was a little bit too intense for me, the constant harassment from beggars and  people who just assume your a tourist, trying to scam you was a little bit too much for me, but poverty is a big thing here, I would probably just give the gardens a skip next time.

How was your weekend? We had quite the eventful weekend. ¬†Driving around the coast to have a picnic in the botanical gardens and visiting company’s gardens.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

Carl’s dad took us on an amazing trip down memory lane, with a trip to Philadelphia. ¬†Now, I know what your thinking, Philadelphia in the States?! why didn’t I talk more about it on my instagram?! No, this Philadelphia is a rural little gem set in Cape town. ¬† Like most little towns get their roots from here in South Africa, Philadelphia used to be a farm. ¬†Farmers used to travel great distances by horse and cart to get to church for sacrament, as a result a farmer donated ¬†a portion of his land to the church, so they could have a church right by them.

This little town is basically surrounded by the church and gives a strange twilight zone kind of feeling, as you walk the streets and see little old ladies sitting on their porch stroking their dogs, with a lit cigarette hanging from their lips, giving off a by gone era feel. ¬†You start to wonder… where is the time machine and how did I get on it? ¬†As we walked around exploring, finding out all the little stories, seeing Carl’s dad get more and more excited as he spoke to everyone he could about the town. ¬†You kind of realize its the little things that matter.

^^ I obviously missed out on the joke.

^^ We had lunch at the cutest little cafe, set right under a pepper tree. I had an amazing portobello mushroom and aubergine burger that was just out of this world.

IMG_2826new

^^ This is an old gravestone written in Dutch, the first settlers in South Africa were Dutch, after that a lot of the other European settlers came from all over Europe.  This cemetery was beyond creepy.  It had  a double fence wrapped around the whole thing, barbed wired and locks everywhere.  I was convinced they were trying to keep a zombie outbreak quiet, but apparently the children here like to vandalise the graves.

Museum hopping

Some people go to Ireland to bar hop, we go to Ireland to museum hop! Our museum hopping day is one of my favourite memories of Dublin. ¬†Well it didn’t feel like it at the time, I was all hungry and cranky and just didn’t want to ¬†walk any more, but Carl would not have any of that! He was on a mission to prove how spontaneous he is, well done Carl you made your point! And kept leading us into anything that looked slightly interesting. ¬†When museums, galleries and all sort of fun things are free, you bet we are going to take full advantage of it.

The museum of archaeology is filled with Viking history, ancient Egypt artefacts and really disgusting bog bodies.  What are bog bodies? well, bodies that were found in a  swamp! All these guys died horrible deaths and I mean of course they did, no one ever got lovingly thrown into a swamp! When I realized these were real bodies and real people I started feeling really sick and completely grossed out, but I persevered and saw all of them! I

Now normal people after seeing the size and having to see everything twice in the museum would have called it a day, but no, not us! We headed off to the National gallery! ¬†Its here that I finally found out what a rule abider Carl is…He made me check my camera bag, just because of one sign saying no cameras! I was shocked and kept pointing at everyone else walking in with cameras. ¬†I mean people were wearing them across their necks, proudly displaying them! but no! My husband had to go play me like that! ¬†Even though I was devastated I still had an amazing time, seeing a Van Gogh painting made me all giddy inside and seeing a Monet painting had me lost for words!

Oh deer, its Phoenix Park

The other day we decided to get ourselves back to Phoenix Park, this time with some carrots in our bag and a less frightened attitude.  I tend not to trust skittish animals, with fighting weapons on their heads,  but we persevered and had an incredible day.

Phoenix park is an amazing park its incredibly huge and amazing. ¬†Its filled with wonderful things to explore including the Wellington Monument and the popes cross. If you are into monstrous towering things, these two things will make you gasp! ¬†We ended up having a small picnic by the cross, ¬†bringing a packed lunch is so old school, but so worth it, you never know where you will have an impromptu picnic. ¬†With all the walking we do in Dublin we are ravenous almost all the time so we have some kind of treat with us at all times. You never want to be hangry when you have an hour walk back home, your husband will start looking like a monster that’s starving you after a while.

We skipped the first herd of deer, because they looked rather fat with the amount of carrots they’ve been fed and went exploring, Carl decided to try his tracking skills and assured me only one deer passed through the wooded area, while I was pointing towards the 30 deer just relaxing on a rugby field. ¬†These deer seemed to not have had the sweet taste of carrot in a long time and came rushing towards us, while I desperately tried to get a carrot out in time. ¬†Getting surrounded by deer is not fun, but fun all at the same time. ¬†I did learn to get out of a sticky situation with greedy deer is to treat them like dogs and throw carrots like a ball, they go running after it, while you can make a clear run out of there.

Build castles in the air

a day spend in Dalkey in the south of Dublin, is like building castle in the air, but daydreaming and reality go hand in hand in this little seaside town, with 7 castles all around and only one you can go into. ¬†A little place where a school, old age home and a building completely locked are all castles, making you wonder ” what wonderland did I just stumble across?” or ” what nightmare is this?, why can’t I go into them?” ¬†Dalkey, is a wonderful little town with panoramic sea views everywhere you look, and but just when you think this is so magical, ¬†you see a man walking around in a nude coloured thong, making all the magic disappear in a record speed, but if you really want to get a good view of all the strange thong men, then the best view in town is definitely at the James Joyce tower, its free and you get to see everything James Joyce. ¬†He seemed liked a typical troubled artist, seeing panthers and just being a horrible house guest, but all the best characters are a little bit strange.

Strolling around this little seaside town so close to Dublin, makes you feel like you’re in the cheesiest rom com in the whole world, but its worth it.
