Hunting for seashells

Happy Thursday guys! I can’t believe tomorrow is Friday already, where did the week go? Time seems to be flying by and I’m just trying to hold on and get all my stuff done.  The days don’t seem long enough anymore, but Spring seems to be right around the corner the sun is coming up earlier and setting later.  Winter has not stopped me from eating delicious frozen treats, all I’ve wanted to eat lately has been ice cream and milkshakes, but being the insane health freak I am I’ve been coming up with way yummier and so much better for you desserts.  I’m excited to share them with you guys, but that’s for another post.

On the weekends when we are stuck for something to do we usually end up walking to the bottom of our insanely steep hill to the beach.  I’ve been wanting to go get some broken seashells, but we always end up forgetting about it, or the fact that we’ve been avoiding going to the promenade, after seeing a naked man posing for photos, kids blowing up condoms like balloons and a dead seal.  To say we’ve been slightly traumatised would be an understatement, but this last time it was pure bliss.  Everyone seemed so happy playing pokemon go, riding bicycles and having picnics.

What kind of dates do you go on with your partner?

A Picnic Date in a Forest

The other morning we set of to have a romantic picnic date at Tokai forest picnic area.  The picnic area is just amazing and is a great place to run around and act like a kid again, or let your kids be kids. It was a cooler day and just the perfect weather for a lovely picnic surrounded by larger than life pine trees, fat squirrels running everywhere and little flowers popping out all over.  I felt so under prepared sitting there with our little salad rolls, popcorn and one measly orange, while everyone was bbq-ing away a storm.  If I had binoculars I would have been ogling out everyone’s preparedness and delicious food.

It was a perfect day to be out in nature and just enjoying each others company,  I don’t know what it is about a nice cool South African winter ( Its like Autumn or Spring for the rest of the world) that makes me so giddy and just want to go explore and picnic everywhere.  I couldn’t wipe the smile of my face, while sitting on the tree stump bench, eating my popcorn and watching my selfish husband find some crackers in the bag and not even offer me one, while he devours the whole lot.  Next time I will definitely bring a little baggy of wood to make a fire and really cosy up to this beautiful weather, hopefully next time Carl will share a cracker with me.

Cape Point

On Saturday we headed to Cape point, the drive there felt insanely long and it didn’t help that the gps maps lady, decided to take us on the craziest route ever created.  We were zigzagging going through the navy base, feeling really awkward driving through military housing and somehow we got to the bottom feeling like we just trespassed on everyone’s property.  We made it in the end and it was glorious.

Cape point  is the most south-westerly tip of Africa, covered in fynbos, beaches, and beautiful little hikes and picnic areas.  We kept having to stop thanks to ostriches thinking they are slow moving cars and refusing to get out of the road and some how finding their way in front of the car every turn we made.  There is also a lot of baboon warnings around, we actually saw a baboon right as we got there, just chilling eating a slice of pizza, not a care in the world, as I tried to take my camera out it started making a dodgy looking stride towards me, so of course I ran away screaming like a little girl, while the baboon ran the other way obviously confused.

Being the cheap people we are we decided to give the “flying dutchman” or the little tram that can take you to the top in 3 minutes a skip and the walk up was great! we saw cute little mice and I found out that all the learn mandarin things I’ve been using are all a bunch of liars! They say that Asian people never say Ni hao………Well we saw all the tourists and I constantly heard everyone saying ni hao.  Lesson learned!

Walking to the top is a treat for the eyes! Panoramic views of the ocean makes you feel like you’ve fallen into a painting.  If Cape town could be any colour it would be blue.  Blue like the skies and the water, it always seem like everything is just blending together.

Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens

I’ve decided to start being more proactive, well proactive in things I want to do, because come weekend Carl and I both get upset with our lack of knowing what to do and the typical I don’t know? what do you want to do? can test any relationship, no matter how great it is.

A couple of years ago I remember attending a wedding in Harold Porter, the venue and the wedding stuck with me even if I remember how uncomfortable I felt.  Being stuck at the kiddie picnic blanket will do that to you.  It just proves all advertising is good advertising…I clearly remember the beautiful mountains, little streams, and how it felt like something straight out of lord of the rings.  I didn’t realize it was 90 km away from us, so I was hoping that my memory did not let me down and it wasn’t going to be a completely imagined thing I made up in my head.

The scenic drive is well worth the trip, on one side you have beautiful mountain and on the other endless ocean, after seeing so many signs that said dangerous rock falls, I calmly told Carl I will be the rock look out for the remainder of the drive.  Being with a man that’s just as panicky as I am and drives the speed limit is just wonderful, I laughed so hard when we had a whole string of people behind us and Carl just looked in the rear view mirror and said ” I hope you guys brought snacks, because this is going to be a long, careful drive.”

When we arrived I was relieved to see that it was even better than I could remember.  Little bridges, streams, and mountains everywhere made me feel like I  was finally in paradise.  Children laughing running around and just having fun, gave it a touch of whimsy.  Even the frog that came after me and decided it wasn’t interested in Carl when I made a run for it added a touch of fun to it.  I recommend you take a picnic and just relax and soak up the beautiful scenery and the amazing smell of the fynbos.

A walk in the forest – Newlands Forest

Since getting the car we’ve been planning our hiking adventures, but when Saturday started approaching and we had a large list of what kind of hike we didn’t feel like doing we started feeling kind of hopeless.

The kind of hike we weren’t interested in for the day was a hike that was in the blistering South African sun, anything that required us to pull ourselves up with chains to get over rocks, no heights, because I’m suffering from severe vertigo lately and something kind of mild.  We finally settled on Tokai only to get there and be turned away, being a little heartbroken we decided to stop at the Tokai market, only to go into the most depressing market I’ve ever seen. There was only 4 stalls and a guy trying to force coffee on us. So off we set with no clue what to do, but Carl, being the little problem solver he is remembered a interesting looking hike that we drove by.

Newlands forest is amazing! It checked all our boxes and was a wonderfully cool walk surrounded by beautiful trees and mountains.  Cute families taking hikes together, older people trying to stay fit and all the wonderful dogs.  I don’t know why all dog owners have to pull their dogs away from me when I’m obviously trying to lure it with mind control and just a look in my eye that says “lets play”.  Don’t apologize for your dog coming to me! I wan’t to stroke them all!

The views are to die for, the magical whimsical forest makes you feel like you’re a pretty, pretty Princess and the Fall leaves just create a wonderful feel.
