Hunting for seashells

Happy Thursday guys! I can’t believe tomorrow is Friday already, where did the week go? Time seems to be flying by and I’m just trying to hold on and get all my stuff done.  The days don’t seem long enough anymore, but Spring seems to be right around the corner the sun is coming up earlier and setting later.  Winter has not stopped me from eating delicious frozen treats, all I’ve wanted to eat lately has been ice cream and milkshakes, but being the insane health freak I am I’ve been coming up with way yummier and so much better for you desserts.  I’m excited to share them with you guys, but that’s for another post.

On the weekends when we are stuck for something to do we usually end up walking to the bottom of our insanely steep hill to the beach.  I’ve been wanting to go get some broken seashells, but we always end up forgetting about it, or the fact that we’ve been avoiding going to the promenade, after seeing a naked man posing for photos, kids blowing up condoms like balloons and a dead seal.  To say we’ve been slightly traumatised would be an understatement, but this last time it was pure bliss.  Everyone seemed so happy playing pokemon go, riding bicycles and having picnics.

Hello friends! How was your weekend? Can you believe its already August, I can’t believe how fast this year has just flown by.  We celebrated our first wedding anniversary by taking a drive into the countryside of Cape town, we found the sweetest little town to walk around in and feel all giddy, I was really surprised by all the restaurants serving vegan friendly meals, its something you don’t often see in small towns! We are still looking for a perfect print to order, so nothing on the first year wedding anniversary gift front yet, but we will find the perfect print eventually, I hope.

^^ This was actually a really hot day, but I was already committed to the beanie ( bad hair day) and the scarf was just meant to be.

How was your weekend? Get up to anything fun.  We’ve been neighbourhood scouting, looking for an area that’s more us and out of the city. It turned out to be a really fun adventure,  seeing alpacas, finding the best shop in the world that sold spaghetti squash and we even found a falafel shop.  Obviously its been a great weekend, hopefully its a sign of a good week!

We’ve been going on little walks around the neighbourhood every night when Carl gets home from work.  Walking at 6 – 7 is a peaceful time here, hardly anyone on the streets, just a couple of crazy drivers, driving like the autobahn opened up here or something, its a reasonably peaceful time to talk, catch up, talk about future plans and where we are headed next.  We usually go back home when the hunger starts kicking in, but I really appreciate these little moments with Carl, its been a rough couple of weeks, going from seeing each other all the time for 4 months to hardly seeing each other.  Its especially hard for me, I try with all my might to stay up to talk and cuddle, but all I can seem to do is fall asleep hard, and wake up when Carl asks me if I’m awake, I usually respond with some mumbo jumbo that makes no sense, but hey we always have weekend.  Life lately!

A Trip Down Memory Lane

Carl’s dad took us on an amazing trip down memory lane, with a trip to Philadelphia.  Now, I know what your thinking, Philadelphia in the States?! why didn’t I talk more about it on my instagram?! No, this Philadelphia is a rural little gem set in Cape town.   Like most little towns get their roots from here in South Africa, Philadelphia used to be a farm.  Farmers used to travel great distances by horse and cart to get to church for sacrament, as a result a farmer donated  a portion of his land to the church, so they could have a church right by them.

This little town is basically surrounded by the church and gives a strange twilight zone kind of feeling, as you walk the streets and see little old ladies sitting on their porch stroking their dogs, with a lit cigarette hanging from their lips, giving off a by gone era feel.  You start to wonder… where is the time machine and how did I get on it?  As we walked around exploring, finding out all the little stories, seeing Carl’s dad get more and more excited as he spoke to everyone he could about the town.  You kind of realize its the little things that matter.

IMG_2791new

^^ I obviously missed out on the joke.

IMG_2800new

^^ We had lunch at the cutest little cafe, set right under a pepper tree. I had an amazing portobello mushroom and aubergine burger that was just out of this world.

IMG_2801new

^^ A fragrant floral arrangement for a rustic feel.

IMG_2803new

^^ These little pepper flowers kept falling on the table, so the obvious thing to do was line them up for a photo.

^^ Freshly baked bread.

^^ The town shop.

IMG_2816new

^^ I would move into this little pink house immediately.

IMG_2820new

^^ As soon as we started walking the roads seem to get busy.  It doesn’t look busy in this photo, but it was busy for a little rural town.

IMG_2826new

^^ This is an old gravestone written in Dutch, the first settlers in South Africa were Dutch, after that a lot of the other European settlers came from all over Europe.  This cemetery was beyond creepy.  It had  a double fence wrapped around the whole thing, barbed wired and locks everywhere.  I was convinced they were trying to keep a zombie outbreak quiet, but apparently the children here like to vandalise the graves.

Beach walks

Happy Friday everybody! I’m feeling mighty fine lately, maybe its the cloudy weather or maybe its because when you think about it life really is good right now.   All the blessings in life, no matter how small is worth celebrating! I guess I should do a little dance?

On Wednesday we went on a trip down memory lane with Carl’s dad, all around his old stomping ground, telling us cute little stories, showing us where he used to live.  I always thought I had a really great memory, but wow, Carl’s dad is out of this world!

We stopped for a quick walk on the beach, sometimes when you get caught up in the destination you forget to take a breather and just enjoy the moment and beauty of things.  I never forget, I’m pretty sure I must be the most irritating person to travel with, I just want to experience everything! Except heights, sharks or anything where I don’t feel safe! I’m not a crazy person!

IMG_2775new

^^ This lifeguard doesn’t seem to be taking his job that seriously.

IMG_2776new IMG_2777new

^^ Kelp everywhere.

IMG_2780new

^^ Carl and I felt so bad walking on the shells.  It felt like we were destroying someone’s home just for the fun of it.

IMG_2784new

^^ I’ve never seen one of these guys ( Blue bottles), but I have heard the horror stories of how the sting of these guys hurts.  I felt really left out as a child, everyone talking about the sting and how horrible it is.

IMG_2785new

^^ I really like its color!

DSC_1116new

^^ Carl looks really happy with his beach discoveries! On a completely side note, I really hate his glasses, every time it tints up I just see the weird band nerd that no one wants to talk to, because he smells like lady deodorant.

What’s your weekend plans?

an instant of life captured for eternity

Life around here has been crazy, but life will always be crazy when you stay on the top of a hill and you have no car! Who needs a gym when you can carry a package of flour up a steep hill that just doesn’t want to quit it.  We’ve managed to stock up quite well, regardless of the “I can’t do it any more! ” feeling half way up the hill.

Evening walks have turned into a spot the fruit game.  Everyone seems to be growing delicious fruit, I don’t know if they are trying to mock me, but it sure feels that way when I look at our tiny balcony! They have inspired me to get creative and get balcony gardening, but its still like they are all telling me, you will never have this.

To be honest my transition here hasn’t been as easy as I would have liked , maybe I’ll write a special post on that, but every day it gets a little better and I start feeling like maybe this could be my home for awhile.  Blame it on the heat, or that I’ve been feeling sick or all the rude people, but this process has not been an easy one ! Its beautiful here and I know this will be a great adventure that I will never forget.  Lets get to photos.
