You might think that I have a thing for British dessert with my second British dessert type overnight oats recipe making an appearing on my blog, but just like my Banoffee overnight oats, this cherry bakewell oats is truly something special.
The first time I had a cherry bakewell I literally felt like the stars aligned and God made me taste the most perfect treat in the history of mankind. That might sound like a complete exaggeration, but I’m not kidding about how much I loved this perfect little morsel from the first bite. It’s not just about the way it tastes either, this little tart is just so beautiful to look at, it’s like the cutest little play tart that should become a tart model. I got so obsessed with cherry bakewell tarts that I would keep some in my backpack for walking all day fuel!, but the problem with these tarts are that you can’t just stop at one. Somehow these delicious tarts can turn the most controlled person into a complete binge eater that feels like crying at the end of a box because you can’t believe there aren’t any left and because how the hell did you eat all of those.
Luckily and Unluckily South Africa doesn’t have any cherry bakewell goodness here. So instead I’ve gotten creative and filled the big cherry bakewell hole in my heart with this amazing overnight oats recipe
This is such an easy recipe that tastes exactly like cherry bakewell tarts, but without all those extra calories and you get to eat dessert for breakfast without getting frowned at! I get a sugar free cherry jam here, so I don’t bother making my own jam or if you don’t have a problem with sugar just add a normal cherry jam to the mix. If you’re not a big fan of cherry you can always use sugar free strawberry jam instead.
CHERRY BAKEWELL OVERNIGHT OATS – serves 1
- 1/3 cup rolled oats
- 1/3 – 1/2 cup milk of choice (depends how thick you want it, I go for a 1/3 cup and add more in the morning)
- 1/4 cup chia seeds or 1/3 cup yogurt
- pinch salt
- 1/2 tsp almond extract
- liquid sweetener to taste
- 1 tbsp cherry jam
- crushed almonds
In a small jar combine the oats, milk, chia seeds, salt almond extract and sweetener. Cover with lid and shake until well combined.
Place in fridge overnight.
The next morning add the jam and yogurt to the top and garnish with almonds.
Add more fruit if desired and enjoy your perfect breakfast treat.
