Its been raining  here for the last couple of days, and I’m loving these cooler days.  Its finally starting to feel a tad like winter, I would call it late fall kind of weather, but this will have to do.  So bring on the hot cocoa and cuddly days, with wonderful hikes that don’t require me to die of heat stroke!

That Farm life / What’s cookin’ good lookin’

The last ‘that farm life’ post.  Wow, time  does not stop for no man.  Carl’s CFA exam is tomorrow; Wowza,  after months of studying, frustration, worry, eventually understanding and confidence, the time to shine is here.  Hopefully all his hard work and the hours he put in will pay off.  You’ve got this, husband!

A strange calm has set over the farm, I say the farm, because it just feels like a cloud of calm just surrounding everyone. Just making us all feel like everything is going to be a-okay. Everything is sorted out, we just have to pack and we are good to go! Being overly prepared really pays off.  I’ve been trying to finish my abnormal psychology book, so I can start reading personality theories on the plane.  Yes, I read psychology books for fun.   Learning is my jam!  I’m more determined than ever to master mandarin, so far its going great, but I still feel really gweilo.  Soon I will be shopping at an Asian grocer without getting strange looks from everyone in it.  Soon! Well hopefully sooner rather than later.  Maybe I’ll speak some bastardization of all the languages I speak.  Making my own monstrous language.  Lets get to photos!

That Farm Life / What’s cookin’ good lookin’

This week has flown by! 13 days before we leave , 8 days until Carl’s exam, 3 -5 days until we sell the fridge.  Its getting real, really fast! The house is clean, the donation pile is huge, the pantry is almost empty, the fridge is a little bit to well stocked and we bought some euros.  Whoohoo.  Guys, if you have some sweet euros or dollars just come visit South Africa, you will be rolling in all the South African Rands. You could probably have the fanciest holiday of your life! and you will get to see lions and stuff.  The exchange rate is ridiculous right now, R7800 got us 500 euros, for realz.

It feels like most of this week consisted of standing in queues at the bank, them charging a lot of money for a little bit of money, but hey we have some euros in cash now, so that’s something to be thankful for.  I’m thankful for this entire adventure even the hard parts, making something happen will always be a little tough, its just persevering and believing it will all work out the way it should.  I have done a ridiculous amount of planning, back up plans, emergency numbers all of it! But things don’t always go according to plan, so here’s to an unplanned adventure and not getting bummed when things don’t work out as planned.  The best memories are the ones you look back and laugh about, even if you don’t laugh right at that second.

How was Thanksgiving? any plans for the weekend?

That Farm life

Not a lot has happened this week on the farm.  We’re living as frugally as possible, so all the money we have left over will go into travels, who needs to eat anyway .  I’ve started selling our stuff and my passport has finally arrived. I just need to go pick it up tomorrow and hope the queue is not terribly long.  Well even if it is, who cares! I get to travel soon!

Sometimes things don’t go according to plan.  Like  home-made ginger beer that turns into a science project.  I just couldn’t wait, I wanted some right at that moment at any cost.  Or when your cat finds  catnip and goes absolutely mental for a very long time.  Belphie is already not the nicest cat in the world, but add catnip to the mix and you’ve got a stone cold killer!

I asked Carl what he would like to remember from farm life and this is what he had to say;

  1. Opening the door early in the morning and seeing a random dog staring at you.  Its a sure fire way to scare yourself awake.
  2. The cry of the jackals at night.
  3. Playing stick ball, because kick ball is too mainstream.  We just beat around a ball with a stick.
  4. Never being able to eat swiss chard, because everything beats us to it.  Here’s looking at you horses, cows and stupid birds.
  5. The amazing sunsets.  Carl is a sunset freak, he’s got a large selection of sunset photos he’s taken.
  6. Every time you get home it feels like a holiday.  We keep it clean.
  7. You know the seasons are changing when our landlord starts wearing shirts.

Photo time!

That Farm Life / What’s cookin’ good lookin’

I’m loving this little segment on my blog! Its a great way of remembering our little farm experience and our first real home together.  We’ve had to push our big move off for a couple weeks as I still don’t have my passport or marriage certificate or any identification, but everything happens for a reason, I say!  Now, Carl will be able to write his exam without stressing about moving to a different country a couple of days later.  We will also be able to celebrate my birthday and have a very hot Christmas.

Between getting rid of all the really strange crap that have accumulated in the house and working out how much to sell everything for, I’m really grateful for the little extra time.   In my experience its always best to just do something. Stop over thinking everything and just do it.   Time for selling all our worldly belongings is close, but the time for a new adventures is even closer!

Things about living on a farm I want to remember:

  1. I’ve seen flies have sex…Its horrible and its even worse when they decide to bang in your hair. Forever unclean!
  2. Getting flies out of your house feels near impossible.  Farm flies seem to love citronella, tea tree oil, clove incense and eucalyptus incense.  They crazy!
  3. Farm mosquitoes are huge and will find a way to suck your blood.   I’ve seen them sucking away a storm through my jeans.  I wish they were a little more hygienic.  You know, maybe go wash your sucker thing off once in a while?
  4. Horses are majestic….until you live with them.  Horse genitalia is not pretty, mountains of poop in front of your door sucks and the random rolling is crazy! They will also eat everything…Ferns included.
  5. Jackals have microphones and they will use it every night to make some utterly interesting sounds.  Falling asleep to jackal sounds sure is great.
  6. Guinea-fowl look like hovercraft’s when they run.
  7. Baby cows are the cutest things on earth! Until they eat your swiss chard.
  8. Having to take your cat outside and stay outside with him so he doesn’t feel scared.  Or he will poo on the couch when you just sit down.
  9. Farm sunsets are the most incredible thing ever!
  10. The deafening quiet.  Peaceful is an understatement.

Lets get to photos!

Homemade ginger ale

^^ Home made ginger ale.  My ginger bug worked amazingly! Next tie I’ll add more ginger, molasses and lemon juice.  It was a little bit mellow for my taste.

Gluten Free bread

^^ This bread has made going gluten free, really easy! It taste so much better than normal bread.  I’ve also started losing the pesky weight that never seemed to go away.  My face fat! and belly fat.  Getting toned!

Lettuce wraps

^^ Chickpea salad cos lettuce wraps! So filling and refreshing.

Green smoothie

^^ Maca spirulina smoothie.  Pretty bubbles

Slytherin scarf

Bell peppers

^^ Bell peppers growing away a storm.

Spaghetti Squash flowers

^^ Spaghetti squash flower.

Dill flower

^^ I love this dill flower.  Its like tiny galaxies.

Its Friday! Do you have any plans?

an instant of life captured for eternity

During a heatwave its best to just stay at home and do a little rain dance ,maybe? We didn’t do a rain dance, but we have been crazily swatting the air and pulling our hair out with all the flies and mosquitoes that have invaded the house! Its like the plague…and the cleaner the house the more flies seem to be coming in.  They are also super big fans of citronella essential oil, clove, eucalyptus and fly away incense.   Do you have any handy tips for keeping flies out of a farm house?  Burn the house down?

yard games

^^ Yard games are always a good idea.

Yard games

^^ Can you spot the ball?

^^ We woke up to really loud mooing outside our bedroom window and found the baby cows mooing at cows across the road.  I got licked by this little cow,  its tongue feels like Belphies.

How was your weekend?

an instant of life captured for eternity

Mondays are definitely for off days.  Thank you Jewish holidays for extra fun times! We’ve really been all over the show with doing things this weekend.  From a ginger beer date at a farm to museum Mondays.   Its been one fun weekend, but boy has it been unbelievably hot, like pass out in a pool and melt away kind of hot.  I’m hoping for rain so my plants will be happy.  A rain dance might be in order.

Pond

^^ We headed over to Maggies country farm and got treated to this view and some really bland ginger beer, it tasted like gingerbug, not the actual delicious beer.  The view made up for it.

Ducks

^^ Cute ducks splashing in the pond.  We also saw catfish jumping out the water, so strange, yet so cool.

DSC_2715new

^^ Farm selfie.  Peace!

DSC_2700new

^^ These little animals are al hand woven beads.  Amazing right?

Wind pump mill

^^ On our way back home we stopped at this little antic shop. It was closed, but the outside area was filled with strange and wonderful things.  A hoarders dream garden, I would say.

Postbox

^^ They must get a lot of mail.

To be or not to be

^^ To be or not to be.  That is the question.

How was your weekend?

Home Office Tour – Its nerdy up in here.

Today I wanted to share our home office with you guys.  When we first moved into this little farm cottage the one  things we knew we wanted was a home office/study.  We wanted to create a little haven where we could feel inspired to work and study without feeling distracted by clutter and mess.  We tried to keep the space clean and express our unique personalities in our decor, we also got our frugal on and got most of the stuff for free, charity shops, made by yours truly and gifted from lovely parents.

Take a gander into our little abode.

DSCF7452new

^^ I promise we do get work done in here.

Home office

^^ No office is complete without some motivational art all over the wall.

home office

^^ I used a clipboard as a frame to add a touch of whimsy and so I can interchange artwork.  The little chalkboard is for writing love notes of course! I also added a string of photos.

home office

^^ Bright coloured frames and motivational quotes,  to really get you working.

Home office

^^ I have an unnatural fear of frogs, so this is the closest I will ever get to batmaning it, and frog woman just doesn’t sound like a superhero I would want to be.  The little pot plant in the background has rosemary in it.  I read an article about rosemary improving memory.

DSCF7602new^^ Little clock and a lot of study material.

DSCF7481new

^^ This guy is always studying.

pompom garland

^^ everybody needs a pompom garland in their office.

DSCF7578new

^^ My reading corner.  I would suggest everyone arm knit themselves a blanket.  These babies are so warm and cosy!

DSCF7580new

^^ This was Carl’s grandfathers chair, that was given to his mother.  She covered all her furniture in this hideous material, because she had 3 boys running a mock in her house.  I would have loved to get this reupholstered in a nicer fabric.

DSCF7575new

^^ You can’t have a reading chair without a basket of yarn.  That’s just crazy.

DSCF7529new

^^ I lightly spray painted this wooden ladder to give it a more weathered look.  The little bookcase to the right is just 4 black crates.

wooden ladder

^^ The bottom ladder step is filled with books.

wooden ladder

^^ We are plant crazy in this house.

DSCF7499new

^^ Starwars lego, biker mice from Mars and harry potter books? We nerd it up hard in here.

DSCF7586new

^^ on top of the crates we have old cameras and a basket filled with this and that.

DSCF7594new

^^ Books, books, books and my grandmothers wedding cake topper.

DSCF7527new

^^ We have a long ledge above the cupboard, we have 4 crates up there filled with nonsense and  on the other side we have musical instruments and this plant.

I hope you enjoyed the little tour of our home office.  This post was inspired by WeWork a community of co-working office spaces across the U.S, they have great rates and is a mighty fine option for everything from start ups to freelancers.  Go check them out
