Baby Led Weaning- Red Lentil and Vegetable Fritters with Avocado slices

Arren is a natural at grabbing and eating.  Yesterday, he actually grabbed an apple out of my hand.  I was really hungry so I wasn’t that amused, but this boy loves to eat and try new food.  When it came to these red lentil and vegetable fritters he just couldn’t get enough.  He kept grabbing for more, when finally I had to cut him off, if you’ve ever seen a baby tantrum, you know it’s not pretty.  

I haven’t gone the full baby led weaning approach, just because I want to give Arren a wide variety of textures and foods.  To me that means giving him some porridge, soup, dahl and his trusty apple sauce.  I give him baby versions of everything we’re eating and so far it’s going great.

I finally found a food that Arren did NOT like…..He liked it so little that every time it touched his tongue he would make vomit sounds, but yet he still kept going back for it.  Do you want to guess what it was?

If you guessed zucchini you would be completely correct.  Baby boy hates zucchini.  His little vomit face was really cute, it seemed so put on and dramatic.  I’m going to keep giving him zucchini just for the theatrics!

These Red Lentil and vegetable fritters are the dream baby led weaning recipe, its easy for your baby to hold, yummy enough to keep them coming back for more, and filled with a lot of nutrition for your little person.  I make 5 small fist sized fritters for Arren and make bigger fritters for us.  When  I adult-ify the fritters I add a bit of chilli powder and salt.

RED LENTIL AND VEGETABLE FRITTERS 

Ingredients

  • 1 cup split red lentils soaked overnight
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed and minced
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp coriander
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 handful washed spinach
  • 1 small carrot grated
  • 1/3 cup of water

Directions

Drain the split red lentils and give a good wash.

Place everything in a blender and blend until it resembles a kind of chunkier pancake mixture.  If it’s too thick add more water.

In a non stick pan add a bit of oil over medium high heat.  Place small fritters in the pan and fry until golden brown on both sides.

let cool for baby.

Adult-ify the fritters for adults and cook bigger fritters for yourself.

Serve to baby with finger sized Avocado slices.
