Arren was a really overdue baby, at the end of my pregnancy I didn’t think he was ever going to come out. It was like he locked the door and just said nope, no, I’m not doing this, and you can’t make me! Fortunately I was lucky enough to have amazing midwives that let me do things in my own pace and didn’t push me into getting Arren out immediately. I wanted him to come out when he was good and ready. When he was ready, he came out like a wrecking ball.
I don’t know if my hour and 5 minute labour had anything to do with this pizza, or the 7 medjool dates I ate everyday or maybe the red raspberry leaf tea I drank religiously (my contractions did feel more effective), or maybe it was just a combination of all of it, but in the early morning after having this pizza for dinner (and a whole pineapple for dessert) my water broke! The key for me was to go heavy handed on everything. When you think you’ve had enough just eat a little more.
Why is a pizza going to start labour? Well because its so delicious you’re baby will have to come out to fully experience the joys of food! The real reason is that oregano and basil is known to stimulate uterine contractions , pineapple helps ripen your cervix and spicy food is just a great way to give your baby a gentle nudge out of his comfy studio apartment that is your body!
You don’t have to be pregnant to enjoy this pizza. Its a perfect combination of spicy and sweet that will make you want to make this the whole time!
I make my own pizza crust either a gluten free one or a sourdough pizza dough recipe, but use whatever you feel like.
SPICY HAWAIIAN PIZZA
- 1 pizza crust
- 1/3 cup spicy pizza sauce
- 1 – 2 tsp minced garlic
- 1 jalapeno pepper, sliced
- slices red pepper
- 3/4 cup chopped fresh pineapple
- 1 tsp oregano
- hot sauce
- 10 – 12 fresh basil leaves shredded.
- cashew cheese ( recipe to follow)
- 1/3 cup roasted cashews ( can use raw, but roasted cashews adds more flavour)
- 1 cup hot water
- 2 tbsp arrow root power or cornstarch
- 1 garlic clove minced
- 1/2 cup nutritional yeast
- 3/4 t salt
- 1 -2 tsp fresh lemon juice
Directions for cheese sauce
In a blender add the cashews with half a cup of water. Blend until creamy. Add the remaining ingredients and blend until combined and smooth.
Pour mixture into a saucepan and cook, stirring constantly until thickened ( medium to high heat). Reduce heat and cook for another 2 -3 minutes while stirring. The mixture will start to look stretchy. Remove from heat.
Preheat oven to 425 F/ 200 degrees celcius
Spread the pizza sauce on the crust evenly. Sprinkle with oregano and garlic. Layer red pepper slices, jalapeno peppers and pineapple on the pizza. Drop the cashew cheese around the pizza and add the basil. ( you can use normal cheese)
Bake for 15 – 20 minutes or until cooked and lightly browned. Remove , drizzle with hot sauce and serve.
Eat a whole pineapple for dessert! Yum.
