One Year Of Marriage

year one

I can’t believe tomorrow its been a year since I got married to my amazingly wonderful soulmate!  This has been the most amazing year of my life, and I recommend everyone should get married, it makes everything better.  I feel so lucky to have found such a  caring, loving, tender, funny, always there for me guy, that has more patience than anyone I know, I mean I was angry at Carl for a whole day, because he didn’t anticipate my needs and get me a doughnut, I really, really wanted one.   Instead of getting angry at me he surprised me with a doughnut the next day.  If that’s not love I don’t know what is.

I can’t wait to spend many more years with him and I’m grateful that he’s stuck with me for eternity.

Happy Friday everyone.  I hope you celebrate in the best way possible by eating Fried food for Fryday!

A day at Camps Bay beach.

We stumbled upon the magical wonder that is Camps bay by accident, we had all these big plans of going to Hout Bay, walking around the market and really taking in this cute little fisherman village.  Instead we got really overwhelmed with the lack of parking anywhere, the crazy amount of tourist and how it wasn’t really what we expected.  Carl being the most frazzled person in the world, decided to just drive back to the apartment, I was like “for real bro?” I wanted to go into the organic grocer and walk around, but instead we found Camps bay beach.

Walking around on a clear beautiful day that was a bit chilly and a whole lot of windy, seeing a lot of different types of people just relaxing and taking in the beauty all over.  I even saw a woman dressed in a purple velvet dress taking a nap on the beach? I still don’t know what that was about, but it made the experience all that much better.  Cute little restaurants and cafes line the streets and it makes for one amazing walk, unless like me you decide to go test out the softness of the sand and almost fall face first into the most magical white sandy beaches you’ve ever seen.  I haven’t given up on Hout bay just yet, next time we might get a bus or just take an uber.

How was your weekend? did you have a daily adventure?  Since pokemon go’s release we’ve been watching pokemon again.  Sometimes its great to feel like a kid again and watch shows from your childhood, every time they call an onigiri a jelly doughnut I laugh and laugh.  Silly people.  Our one year wedding anniversary is coming up in a week, a year has just flown by! We’ve been looking for the perfect paper joined gift to get, we’ve been looking all over the show for a perfect print, but we keep coming up empty.  I guess the best place to look is online.  What did you get for your one year wedding anniversary?

Smoked Paprika Black Bean Burgers

Ever since making these black bean burgers I’ve been craving them nonstop, that’s how good these yummy little things are.  Surprisingly we had some burgers left the next day and  I decided to  crumble it into a kale salad,  let me tell you guys something it was like heaven in my mouth! They were even better the next day and they made my daily salad go from bleh salad, to Damn! That’s one great salad.

This recipe all started when I made red lentil fritters one night and couldn’t stop thinking that it would make the perfect add along to a veggie burger, with the memory in the back of my mind and two tins of black beans in my basket, I decided it was time to get experimenting.  The smoked paprika adds a little oomph to these burgers that will make you feel like you’ve just taken this burger right off the grill and if you forger the last couple of burger in the pan and its just a tad burned the feeling will intensify.  I decided to give a burger bun a skip and just have it just like that loaded with salad, cucumber, tomatoes and avocado with a perfect dill pickle sauce to take it over the edge, but feel free to enjoy it anyway you want.

SMOKED PAPRIKA BLACK BEAN BURGERS – serves 6

  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper, or more if you want added spice

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 red onion, finely diced

An ocean drive, a quick beach walk and one beautiful view.

Over the weekend we decided to go for a beach walk, we wanted to go for the walk we went with, with Carl’s dad, but instead got so incredibly lost and just couldn’t find the right spot.  We kept trying to remember the conversation we had and the exact route, but we just couldn’t get there.  Eventually we decided it was time to just get out and go for a walk.  As soon as I got out of the car I wanted to get back in, the wind was piercingly cold and the sun was so hot, it was a mix of emotions and feeling I just couldn’t really figure out, but we kept walking and I was rewarded with the most beautiful view of table mountain I’ve ever seen.  The mountain with ocean, and gentle floating seagulls made me want to go get an ice cream and just forget all my troubles.  Next time I’ll definitely wear a bigger coat or just wait for a not so windy day to go play around!

How was your weekend? After a lot of planning we finally decided to go for a walk on the beach at melkbos strand.  We didn’t expect it to be so windy and sunny all at the same time, and somehow felt like we got frostbite with heatstroke all at the same time.  We decided to make a run back to the car for safety!  On Sunday we walked to the waterfront from our apartment, I really love walking to places I want to go, its the best way to completely experience a place and see little beautiful things as you wander around.  Here is to a wonderful week!

Beach Days

The one thing about Cape town that everyone should know is, that everyday is a a beach day here.  Its never that cold, even on the coldest day all I’ve needed was a thin jumper and maybe a scarf, because scarves bring any outfit together, right?  And sometimes there is no need for a jumper at all! Cape town really struggles to do winter, its always trying to force its hand by showing signs of summer.  I’ve really enjoyed all the flowers out and the butterflies dancing from one flower to another.  Even on the dreariest day, the sun will come out eventually and blind you with how blue the sky is.

Over the weekend we headed to fishhoek beach,  its got a wonderful little walk way that’s just filled with amazing scenery everywhere you look!  Except when you pass a really old, extremely sun damaged man, sun bathing in the tiniest speedo you’ve ever seen, then you try not to make eye contact while shuffling away fast.  Even the beach is beautifully sandy and not that packed; it just seems like the best place to play around and build some sandcastles.

Hiking, squirrels and a lot of Picnics in Deer Park

We’ve been all about deer park lately! Its our quick lets go hiking somewhere place that’s so close to the city and just amazingly beautiful.  Walking around beautiful trees, little streams, being pleasantly surprised by the endless ocean with just a touch of urban feel and being made feel small by the monstrous table mountain.   After our hike we usually go find a place to sit under the trees to eat some treats and have a talk before heading back and getting started with our day.  I wish I could just sit there forever.

We’ve gone to deer park quite a few times and I have not seen one deer, it feels like it should be covered in deer, maybe its an ironic name and I guess squirrel park doesn’t sound as nice.

^^ This was actually a really hot day, but I was already committed to the beanie ( bad hair day) and the scarf was just meant to be.

How was your weekend? Get up to anything fun.  We’ve been neighbourhood scouting, looking for an area that’s more us and out of the city. It turned out to be a really fun adventure,  seeing alpacas, finding the best shop in the world that sold spaghetti squash and we even found a falafel shop.  Obviously its been a great weekend, hopefully its a sign of a good week!

A Picnic Date in a Forest

The other morning we set of to have a romantic picnic date at Tokai forest picnic area.  The picnic area is just amazing and is a great place to run around and act like a kid again, or let your kids be kids. It was a cooler day and just the perfect weather for a lovely picnic surrounded by larger than life pine trees, fat squirrels running everywhere and little flowers popping out all over.  I felt so under prepared sitting there with our little salad rolls, popcorn and one measly orange, while everyone was bbq-ing away a storm.  If I had binoculars I would have been ogling out everyone’s preparedness and delicious food.

It was a perfect day to be out in nature and just enjoying each others company,  I don’t know what it is about a nice cool South African winter ( Its like Autumn or Spring for the rest of the world) that makes me so giddy and just want to go explore and picnic everywhere.  I couldn’t wipe the smile of my face, while sitting on the tree stump bench, eating my popcorn and watching my selfish husband find some crackers in the bag and not even offer me one, while he devours the whole lot.  Next time I will definitely bring a little baggy of wood to make a fire and really cosy up to this beautiful weather, hopefully next time Carl will share a cracker with me.
