Silvermine Nature Reserve

On Saturday we headed to Silvermine Nature Reserve, after our initial plans didn’t work out according to plan.  Cape town has been giving me a completely Mordor feeling, like I’m Frodo and I finally made it to mount doom.  The fog horn that seems to be always going when I’m trying to sleep, the intense kelp smell and all the burn from the fires kind of give it that vibe.  Its still pretty and I am a big fan of Tolkien, so it will do for now.

Walking around the reservoir is really lively with everyone gathering around to have a weekend BBQ.  We decided to walk the other route which was just as easy, its a perfect hike for walking dogs and little kiddies.  The little flowers all over is a joy to see.  We ended the hike off with some crackers and chat.  Like all hikes should end.

How was your weekend? we decided to go to silvermine for a casual hike around on Saturday.  As casual as walking in the blistering sun without any shade for hours can be.  We took some crackers  and had ourselves an impromptu  picnic on some strange rock formations, my bum is still traumatized from sitting on the rock seats!  We also decided to go check out Kirstenbosch craft market and secured ourselves a copy of the hobbit, to complete our collection!   I can’t believe the weekend flew by like this, next time I will demand it to stay longer.

Oh! I can definitely not forget that I had my first long drop experience and I can honestly say its just the worst!  The smell was horrible and I could see piles of poop while trying to pee.  It was an experience, that I hope I wont have to ever repeat.

Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens

I’ve decided to start being more proactive, well proactive in things I want to do, because come weekend Carl and I both get upset with our lack of knowing what to do and the typical I don’t know? what do you want to do? can test any relationship, no matter how great it is.

A couple of years ago I remember attending a wedding in Harold Porter, the venue and the wedding stuck with me even if I remember how uncomfortable I felt.  Being stuck at the kiddie picnic blanket will do that to you.  It just proves all advertising is good advertising…I clearly remember the beautiful mountains, little streams, and how it felt like something straight out of lord of the rings.  I didn’t realize it was 90 km away from us, so I was hoping that my memory did not let me down and it wasn’t going to be a completely imagined thing I made up in my head.

The scenic drive is well worth the trip, on one side you have beautiful mountain and on the other endless ocean, after seeing so many signs that said dangerous rock falls, I calmly told Carl I will be the rock look out for the remainder of the drive.  Being with a man that’s just as panicky as I am and drives the speed limit is just wonderful, I laughed so hard when we had a whole string of people behind us and Carl just looked in the rear view mirror and said ” I hope you guys brought snacks, because this is going to be a long, careful drive.”

When we arrived I was relieved to see that it was even better than I could remember.  Little bridges, streams, and mountains everywhere made me feel like I  was finally in paradise.  Children laughing running around and just having fun, gave it a touch of whimsy.  Even the frog that came after me and decided it wasn’t interested in Carl when I made a run for it added a touch of fun to it.  I recommend you take a picnic and just relax and soak up the beautiful scenery and the amazing smell of the fynbos.

How was your weekend? We had quite the eventful weekend.  Driving around the coast to have a picnic in the botanical gardens and visiting company’s gardens.

Taking a few steps back, to eventually move forward.

IMG_0621new

Lately its felt like we’ve been thrown a million steps back.  Sitting in our apartment that looks like we are stuck in a bad 80’s sitcom will make you feel that way.  The washing machine is so ridiculously old that I have to hand wash and wring out everything to get everything clean, but its not just because we somehow landed in a cockroach infested apartment that makes me feel like that.  Before going to Ireland we were making a lot more money, living in a nice little farm cottage and just enjoying our non stinky environment, but taking so many steps back has made me realize that sometimes you need to take a few steps back to get put on the life path that you want.

Yes, back in the day we were making more money, but Carl was lost and hating his job.  We sold all our stuff to be able to live in Ireland and now we have nothing, but to be honest all the stuff we had was really just not us.  Outdated couches, hand me downs and a bed that had some serious spring issues doesn’t exactly scream, life path I want to be one.  Going to Ireland made us realize how we don’t want to live, we don’t want to be always worrying about money, so never actually doing anything, I never want to make my children feel like giant financial burdens that are just a nuisance, we want to go on more adventures no matter how small and we want to move to a place with a cooler climate.

Our trip to Ireland made us grow, really soul search and figure out plans and wants.  Carl wants to go into finance and he finally has his foot in the door.  yes, he is super bored and doesn’t feel like he’s there yet, but he’s got clear goals now and knows what he wants.  After years of wanting to become a Psychologist and having my family completely put me off of it, I’ve decided to live my own life and just be who I want to be.  I mean when you’re reading psychology test books for fun, maybe its time you get the ball rolling and get started in the career path I want to be on.

So sometimes you get thrown off the path that you assumed was the path you were suppose to be on, because it was easy and convenient.  To be led onto the path that’s going to make you stronger and give you more than you expected.  We’ve been thrown off the train, and shocked by all the trails that have been put in our way over such a short period of time, but I’ve realized something, there is never a perfect time for anything, and the best things in life are the unexpected, that turns into the best parts of your life.

Life lately has been a whole bunch of the not feeling to greats, maybe its the changing season, or the fact that its still so hot during fall and I just can’t get over the fact that the ocean smells so bad here, but I have not been feeling well at all.  Hopefully it will soon pass and I will be ready to get on with many more adventures and fun!

Bo-Kaap, colorful houses and a lot of people

Bo-kaap is one of the top things to do in Cape town when you google things to do around here, its even on a list of reasons to stay in Cape town, but to be honest they also think a reason to stay is the English bull terrier club.  Why would I want to stay because of a dog club?

Bo-kaap is filled with history, colorful houses and so many people.  I personally didn’t like it much, just because of tour bus upon tour bus of people all trying to walk around these narrow streets, taking photos of the houses.  So many people doing handstands trying to take just the perfect photo and the poor owners just standing on their porch looking really confused.  These cobblestone streets are interesting to walk around, but to be honest, I’ve seen better cobblestones and a quick walk around was enough to satisfy my curiosity.

A walk in the forest – Newlands Forest

Since getting the car we’ve been planning our hiking adventures, but when Saturday started approaching and we had a large list of what kind of hike we didn’t feel like doing we started feeling kind of hopeless.

The kind of hike we weren’t interested in for the day was a hike that was in the blistering South African sun, anything that required us to pull ourselves up with chains to get over rocks, no heights, because I’m suffering from severe vertigo lately and something kind of mild.  We finally settled on Tokai only to get there and be turned away, being a little heartbroken we decided to stop at the Tokai market, only to go into the most depressing market I’ve ever seen. There was only 4 stalls and a guy trying to force coffee on us. So off we set with no clue what to do, but Carl, being the little problem solver he is remembered a interesting looking hike that we drove by.

Newlands forest is amazing! It checked all our boxes and was a wonderfully cool walk surrounded by beautiful trees and mountains.  Cute families taking hikes together, older people trying to stay fit and all the wonderful dogs.  I don’t know why all dog owners have to pull their dogs away from me when I’m obviously trying to lure it with mind control and just a look in my eye that says “lets play”.  Don’t apologize for your dog coming to me! I wan’t to stroke them all!

The views are to die for, the magical whimsical forest makes you feel like you’re a pretty, pretty Princess and the Fall leaves just create a wonderful feel.

an instant of life captured for eternity

We’ve been going on little walks around the neighbourhood every night when Carl gets home from work.  Walking at 6 – 7 is a peaceful time here, hardly anyone on the streets, just a couple of crazy drivers, driving like the autobahn opened up here or something, its a reasonably peaceful time to talk, catch up, talk about future plans and where we are headed next.  We usually go back home when the hunger starts kicking in, but I really appreciate these little moments with Carl, its been a rough couple of weeks, going from seeing each other all the time for 4 months to hardly seeing each other.  Its especially hard for me, I try with all my might to stay up to talk and cuddle, but all I can seem to do is fall asleep hard, and wake up when Carl asks me if I’m awake, I usually respond with some mumbo jumbo that makes no sense, but hey we always have weekend.  Life lately!

Boulders Beach

Over the weekend we went on a little adventure drive.  With a car at our disposal there was no stopping us! We decided that the gps lady on Google maps was trying to get us to drive into a river,  so we turned her off and just got to places the good old fashioned way, by looking at all the road signs and hoping you don’t miss one! We had the idea of going to Muizenberg to go have a look at the vintage changing areas, but things started progressing and somehow we ended up at boulders beach.  Everything was just so close! It all just felt like one long town.

After all our fast exploring we decided to go find the penguins! So off we set going the completely wrong way and leading a whole bunch of tourist astray.  When we finally realized nothing was on this side, we turned around, watching more people go the way we came from.  We managed to find the penguins just chilling around the board-walk! Penguins are just the cutest, they are like little babies dressed in tuxedos just waddling around! We even saw a Mommy penguin feeding her baby.  They have a barrier between you and the penguins and very strict signage that warns you of the danger of biting penguins.  So I was quite happy to see these little guys from a distance.

As you continue on the little wooden path you get wowed by the amazing beach.  The clearest blue waters, penguins swimming and 540 million year old granite boulders! God’s creations are truly amazing.  Next time I want to have a swim with the penguins and hope they don’t bite my toes.
