Harry Potter Home Inspiration – Gryffindor

Its time for another Harry Potter home inspiration post! and today’s inspiration comes from GRYFFINDOR!  and the crowd goes wild.

Gryffindor was founded by Godric Gryffindor,  the characteristics for Gryffindor consists of; courage, chivalry and determination.  Personally I don’t think I would have landed a spot in Gryffindor, but I think we all have a little Gryffindor inside of us.

Finding home inspiration from Gryffindor is rather easy.  With all those velvet couches, big pPersianrugs, dramatic fireplaces,  reading nook and huge wooden cabinets.  You just want to become a star quidditch playing, brave, but ever so reckless, with just a hint of arrogance Gryffindor.

Now lets take a look at my version of the Gryffindor dormitories!

^^ Now these are a great take on the Gryffindor couches and they still look comfy enough, for a long relaxing nap after learning about spells and potions.

^^ It just wouldn’t be Hogwarts without a fire place and the Gryffindor dormitories are no different.  These fireplaces range from the overly dramatic to minimalistic, but yet all of them have that drama you want.

^^ Lets just take a second to talk about how incredible this sliding bookcase is.  Its magical just to gaze upon it! Sign me up for one of those, right now!

^^ Big clunky bookcases have never looked so good, right?

^^ I’ve always had a thing for large Persian rugs, but boy, do they have a large price tag to go with the largeness of the carpet.  These are absolutely breathtaking, I truly believe that blue one should be in my house right now.

^^ The one thing I love about Harry Potter, is the way it can make you giddy and these fireplace reading nooks, just speak to my heart.  They SPEAK to it!

^^ You know you can’t go to Hogwarts without your trunk, and with all those outrageously small side tables in the Gryffindor dorm, you will have to use your trunk as a pretty table.

^^ This was the only red bedding I liked, it suits the room so well and you know you have to represent your colours.

^^ and the best for last the four poster beds that just bring out the Prince an Princess inside of us.  I mean wizard and witch.

Happy Friday everyone.  I hope you have found some home inspiration, if you are going on a shopping spree this weekend, if not have fun!

Caramelized Onion, Sweet potato and Spinach Quesadillas

Its no secret that I love Mexican food.  I’m all the way in South Africa, but hot damn I love me some good Mexican food.   We even have a quesadilla song.  Yes, an actual song.  Played on ukulele that’s just about quesadillas, that’s how much we love them here.  The song is also really catchy and I find myself singing it randomly during the day.

Great meals come from having no inspiration and wham you have something delicious all up in your face.  This quesadilla is so delicious you will just want to keep eating, I made a salad to go with it, but I didn’t even bother eating it, that’s how good they are.  You can also add vegan cheese or regular cheese.  I refuse to buy vegan cheese in this country, because its just so expensive and taste like a side order of meh.

  • 2 sweet potatoes, boiled till tender, mashed with a little margarine and milk. Seasoned with salt and pepper.
  • 4 small tortillas
  • 1 cup spinach, washed and chopped
  • 1 onion, peeled, sliced
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • salsa and avocado to serve.

In a large skillet add the olive oil over medium high heat.  Add the onion and cook until translucent.  Lower heat and add the balsamic vinegar and wait till it thickens, continue stirring and add the sugar.  Cook for 2 minutes.  This is my fast/lazy version.

Lay out the tortilla, and start assembling.  I half my quesadillas, because I like to overfill them, they  also feel sturdier in my hand that way.

Add spinach.

A couple tbsp sweet potato mash.

Caramelized onions.

Heat a little olive oil in a pan and fry each side until golden.

Let cool slightly and serve.

We always have some after dinner conversation that turns into Belphie sneaking on Carl’s lap, and both of us wondering when he got there.

This never ends well, because when you try to nudge him off, he gets really angry and bites your boobs or under arms.  He’s been banned from sitting on my lap, because of this.

This is Carl telling Belphie he needs to go study.  He got bitten.

How To Keep Your Plants Happy and Healthy

I’m not an expert when it comes to gardening, but I have had great success with my gardens so far.  Gardening has become my zen place, the place I can just get my hands dirty and grow beautiful flowers, vegetables and herbs.  Believe me once you’ve planted your first garden you will not want to stop.  Growing your own vegetables is such a rewarding experience, harvesting your first tomato or any other vegetable just gives you a sense of pride.  It has not been an easy journey, I’ve had my share of pests ( aphids, I hate you), bad luck and just bad research on my part.  In the end the rewards out weigh some failures.

  1. RESEARCH:  Its easy to go to a nursery and just pick a bunch of pretty flowers and vegetable seeds, but you have to do your research.   Start googling that specific type of flower and see how to take care of it.  Some plants require special care so its best to research.  When it comes to choosing  vegetable seed varieties, always make sure you choose a variety that will flourish in your climate.
  2. LIQUID FERTILIZER:  Your plants will thank you for giving them a little nutrient boost once a week.  I get my liquid fertilizer from a nursery close by, the stuff smells so bad, but a little goes a long way.
  3. SOIL: Well drainage soil is a must for plants,  they want a shower not a bath.
  4. MORNING WATERING:  Water your garden in the morning so it will conserve water and not get mildew.
  5. GIANT FERNS: I love our giant hanging ferns and keeping them looking great is not as hard as it would seem. Get a large bucket add 2 tbsp epsom salt and a gallon of water.  Let your fern sit in the water for 10 minutes before you hang it up.  You only have to do this once a week.
  6. LEFT OVER WATER FROM BOILING OR STEAMING VEGETABLE:  Use this water for watering your garden.  Its just the nutrient soup your plants will love.
  7. INDOOR PLANTS:  Over watering is your enemy! Just don’t do it!  Wait till the soil is dry and give you plants a light water shower.

I hope you found these tips helpful in some way. If I can grow a garden with a bunch of mean horses trying to eat everything, you can too.

Raw Strawberry Porridge

I have this odd relationship with oats, I will be all excited to make it and after taking two bites realize it could never be as delicious as a piece of crunchy toast.  That’s when the oats sadness sets in, and I literally start feeling like I’m eating the worst thing in the world.  I’m sorry oats, maybe one day you will take toast place.  My solution to my need for toast when I wake up, is to keep the bread out of sight, and make something super yummy.

This raw porridge is that yummy.  Its a great way to start your morning of right, with that really delicious taste that will make you want to kick the days butt!  To put the strawberry on the top, its really easy to make.

  • 1 large apple, peeled and chopped
  • 1 pear, peeled and chopped
  • 4 large strawberries, washed
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup non dairy milk
  • sweetener to taste

Place everything in a blender and blend until its a porridge consistency.

Serve Immediately.

My top tips for getting that Summer glow

woman excited with sunrise

It might not be Summer here, but I do live in Africa.  The harsh African sun, sure can be a mean ageing machine, but with these tips you will be able to get that Summer glow all year long, no matter where in the world you are.

  1. DIET

What you put in you get out, and it all shows on your skin.  I hardly wear foundation, so I really try to keep my skin looking great.  Every morning I take a multivitamin, and start my day off with a green smoothie or a juice.  I try to eat a low carb diet during the day, consisting of fruit and vegetables,  and avoid snacking.  When I snack I reach for a seeds and nuts, rather than having crisps and chocolate.  I also drink lots of water and herbal teas during the day and try to avoid soda’s at all costs.

With Carl’s eczema eating a clean, unprocessed diet with lots of water has really helped reduce almost all signs of it.

Doing any physical activity really makes you feel great.  Sweating out all that bad toxins and just running with those endorphins!

When it comes to exercise I believe that no one can tell you what to do, find something that you enjoy and do it!  I try and do 45 minutes of yoga 5 days a week and hike on the weekend, but sometimes life happens and you cant get to it! Don’t stress yourself out worrying about what you can’t do today, its easy to work in a little exercise wherever you are.  If you are running errands try and find a parking spot a little further away, and just walk that extra bit.  If you have kids, play with them.  Walk to the shops.  We have a push mower and boy does that thing give you a great workout, while you do some garden work.

Its easy to fit in exercise with a tiny bit of creativity, and your glowing skin will be the reward that just keeps giving.

Everyone is different, so what works for someone else might not work for you.  Your location also plays a factor in what will work for you for example if you lived in a humid area, your skincare routine will be different from someone that lives in a dry climate.  Find what works for you and stick with it.

The one thing that’s important for your skin is a good sunscreen.  Vitamin D is great, but to much sun is terrible for your skin, always protect yourself with a good sunscreen before you go out.

I keep it simple and wash my face with cold water, tone it with apple cider vinegar and moisturise with a small amount of coconut oil.  It works for me, so I stick with it.

The best for last.  Happiness radiates from the inside out and gives you that glow, that just don’t quit.  Find something that makes you happy, do things that make you happy and always have fun.  Decide to be happy today and don’t let anything get you down.

Everything happens for a reason and stressing about something won’t change it, being clear minded will help solve any problem.

If you are looking for great recipes and products for glowing skin, or just a healthier lifestyle be sure to check out ALOHA.  They have some great recipes up on their page that just looks to good to eat, and packed full of superfoods!   They sure got me inspired for that Summer glow.
